Old time truck for contest, South Tacoma Motors, Ted Hoakinson. Three men stand with an old Chevrolet truck. The cab is very tall and has a curved hood. The wheels are spoked and the tires are worn flat. One of the men has white hair and points lovingly at the hood over the engine. Both the other men are listening carefully to what he is telling them.

When the South Tacoma Motor Company at 5602 South Tacoma Way ran a contest for old time trucks in June of 1947, this Chevrolet was probably the winner. An unidentified man, hat in hand, stands next to a 1919 Chevrolet Platform Stake. Chevrolet made their first trucks in 1918. They had only manufactured 8,179 trucks by the end of 1919. During the spring and early summer of 1947, a group of boys from the Tacoma Boy's Club picked berries and did odd jobs to raise the money for a trip to San Francisco to play a baseball game against the Bay City's Boy's Club. By the end of July the funds were raised and they were ready to go. Packing their gear, in front of the Boy's Club building at 711 So. 25th Street, for their journey south are: (l to r) Glenn Huffman, Jerry Harding, Dick Scheisz, John Bartinetti, Ray Boen, Dick Palamidessi, Al Otto, Gene Reiber, George Nuick, Jerry Calkins, Jack Murphy and E.S. June flower show, Tacoma Gardens at Wells Hall. The Tacoma Garden Club held its annual spring flower show June 3, 1947, at Wells Hall. This year's awards include the Hicks-Corse tile table to be given permanently at this show for the most artistic arrangement entered by those who had previously won this award. The Tuberculosis League of Pierce County announced that a mobile X-Ray unit would be in Tacoma for ten days starting July 15, 1947, for the purpose of giving X-Rays to as many as wanted to have them. Here a female technician handles the X-Ray machine for a man who has come in for a free chest X-Ray. Chest X-Rays were an important tool for the early detection of tuberculosis. In the 1940s tuberculosis was still a major cause of death in the United States. Effective drug treatment was not available until the 1950s. (T.Times, 7/12/1947, p.3)

Urban Plumbing and Heating truck, South Tacoma Motors, Ted Hoakinson. The Chevrolet delivery truck has a short hood over the engine. The bed has been built as tall as the cab right behind the cab and then is much lower over the rear wheels to the back of the bed. It is parked in front of an ivy covered warehouse. Urban Plumbing advertised they could install automatic fire sprinklers, air conditioning and plumbing.

Three Spanish American war veterans stand in front of the Christy's Cafe at 510 Sixth Avenue. The United Spanish War Veterans held their 46th annual encampment in Tacoma July 17, 18, and 19, 1947. Over 600 delegates were expected to attend. 200 members of the women's auxiliaries from Washington and British Columbia also attended. (T.Times, 7/12/1947, p.10; 7/15/1947, p.5; 7/18/1947,p.1)

MacIntosh, secretary and treasurer of Washington Steel & Welding Company, checks plans of the new Fabwood glue machine constructed in the company shops. With him, pointing out blueprint detail, is Don Porter of Porter Engineering Company who designed the machine. Bob Muehlenbruch, draftsman, directs a workman who is adding finishing touches to the machie which was ordered by the Grays Harbor Chair Company of Aberdeen, Washington. The machine uses scrap lumber which, after processing in the Fabwood machine, emerges as plywood suitable for chair bottoms and table tops. (T.Times, 6/11/1947, p.7)

Pierce County Painters and Decorators Association. Nine men attend a meeting. The Painting and Decorating Contractors of America local union. Berger M. Antonsen was president of the local, L.K. Mikkelsen served as secretary and manager, Stanley Tystad was secretary and Gunnar Leggerini, L.P. Bidwel, and Albin Danielson were members. Gunnar Leggerini was also president of the Washington State Council of Painters and Decorators. Mr. Leggerini is believed to be seated, second from right. During the summer of 1946, while Tacoma's school age children were on vacation, a group of police candidates were taking classes at Stadium High School. At the end of August, 37 of the candidates received diplomas and were declared full-fledged members of the Tacoma Police Department. Attending the graduation were a number of veterans of the Tacoma and Seattle police departments including: Police Captain A.E. Farrar, third from the left in the front row; Police Chief P.G. Gregg, in a dark suit and white hat; Safety Commissioner R.S. Temme, in light colored suit and "skimmer"; and Seattle Police Captain Emile Vallet, next to Temme. In October of 1946, an unidentified young man, dressed as a Roman soldier, walked down Pacific Avenue carrying a shield with a poster advertising the movie "Caesar and Cleopatra" playing at the Music Box Theater. The film version of George Bernard Shaw's play starred Vivien Leigh as Cleopatra and Claude Rains as Ceasar.With a production cost of almost $6 million, it was one of the most expensive productions in cinema history up until then. The two men on the right are Nelson and Ed Richards, two of four active owners of the studio. The woman seated has been identified as Velda Inez (Vink) Richards, the wife of Nelson Richards. According to her April 11, 2012 obituary, Velda Richards became an accomplished portrait and wedding photographer and in 1959, manager of the Richard's Villa Plaza Portrait Studio. Mrs. Richards was predeceased by husband Nelson in 1980 and only child Steven in 1986. She passed away on March 27, 2012 in Portland.
