Andrienne, famous handwriting analyst and graphologist, posed with developer and civic leader Norton Clapp in his office, looking at a handwriting sample. Andrienne, known only by the single name, is a practitioner of the exact science of determining personality traits by observing handwriting. She has been hired by the Tacoma Times to tell readers secrets hidden from them that are loudly told in their handwriting. Her analysis of Mr. Clapp found him to be the possessor of a keen intelligence, wit and humor. (T. Times, 4/4/1939, p.1)

The Commerce Street Business Men's Club Dog Parade was held on April 22, 1939. The only requirements to enter were that kids had to be under 16 and have a dog. Over 1,000 kids turned out to parade, viewed by many times that number parents and well wishers. The Grand prize winner, Shirley King (2nd from right) is pictured with her 14-year-old dog Bummer; runner-up Donald Grassfield (right) holds the collar of his German shepherd. (T. In September of 1939 the members of Tacoma's Daughters of Italy Drill Team gathered at Normanna Hall for a group portrait. The drill team members all dressed in their satin uniforms with satin hats and strap shoes. They were scheduled to travel by train to San Francisco on Sept. 6th, 1939 to attend the Supreme Convention of Sons and Daughters of Italy and compete for national honors. The competition was included as an attraction at the San Francisco World's Fair. In the front row, left to right, are Eva Nomellini, Carmella Pupo, Rose Pellegrini, Mobel Monaldi, Kate Lanza and Lena Reda. 2nd row, Rose Furaco, Mary Recona, Mary Carbone, Esther Reda, Elvira Salatino, Rose Colombini and Caroline Turco. Daughters of Italy (Tacoma);

Rehearsals for the Drama League play "Stage Door" at the Little Theater. The characters are, left to right, Antonio de Basto Lello as typical Hollywood producer Mr. Gretzl, Creighton Flynn as Hollywood scout David Kingsley, and Florence Skeels as hopeful young actress Terry. Miss Skeels had previously performed with the Portland Civic Theater, the Seattle Repertory and at the University of Southern California. The play, written by Edna Ferber and George Kaufman, would be presented at the Little Theater off Carr St. Sept 27-30, 1939. It was set in the "Footlights Club" in New York City, a boarding house for striving actresses. The play had been presented originally at the Music Box Theater in NYC in autumn of 1936 to critical acclaim. The production and its cast of 27 was well received in Tacoma. (T. Miss Klopfenstein, who was leaving shortly for the University of Washington, is dressed in a 3-piece Spruce Green Rothmoor suit from Klopfenstein's women's shop. Mr. Baker has on a moss green imported Aberdeen Shetland 3-button suit with a topcoat of Donegal tweed. His outfit is from Hart Schaffner & Marx. The staff of a Franklin Foods Store poses in their Jubilee hats. In 1939, Franklin had locations at the Crystal Palace Public Market, 117 No. G, 5408 South Tacoma Way and 602 So. 38th. The man on the right of the standing row is possibly owner and founder George G. Franklin. In 1936, Franklin purchased Haddaway Hall, 4301 No. Stevens, from the Weyerhaeuser estate.

Unidentified man loading boxes of milk bottles onto a conveyor belt at the Tacoma Dairy in November of 1926. The company had recently occupied their new modern plant at 1802 E. 27th St. Most of the plant was electrically operated with push button controls. At the time of the photograph, the plant distributed only milk, but had plans to manufacture buttermilk, cottage cheese and ice cream under the brand name of "Oh-So-Good." (filed with Argentum)

The pasteurizing room at the new Tacoma Dairy in November of 1926. The man in the background is in the receiving room, where the milk arrives from local dairies. The milk pours into large metal containers in the foreground. These are the pasteurizing machines. The Tacoma Dairy had recently moved into their new $50,000 plant at 1802 E. 27th. Eleven girls in sweaters with a spur logo and knee length skirts plus their sponsor pose on the steps of a campus building. Spurs, a non profit service club, had been on the campus since 1925. ca. 1928. Architectural components from Walker Cut Stone Company for the Capital building; loaded on the back of a flatbed truck. Robert Walker started his stone cutting business in a shed on Puyallup Ave. in 1907. By the 1920's, he had demonstrated the building superiority of Wilkeson sandstone and finalized the largest stone contract to date, the state Capital buildings in Olympia. ca. 1928. Two men posed by trucks bearing stone architectural pieces and signs "Stone for Capital Building." The stone was from the Walker Cut Stone Co. With the awarding of the contract for the stone work for the state Capital buildings in Olympia, the Walker Cut Stone Co. expanded into their new plant at 2403 Center St. The contract for the Capital buildings was the largest stone contract ever made to date.
