College of Puget Sound summer band camp group posed on the campus. For the first time, the music department of CPS would be offering a program combining music study with vacation and recreation. The camp would be open to high school students receiving a superior rating in solo and ensemble playing, who exhibit scholarship and good character. The students would live at the college and be given a private lesson each week as well as instruction in harmony and arranging. In addition, the group would perform several concerts throughout the summer. Sixty five students participated in the first month long camp. (T. ca. 1941. The "Idaho," built by the Seattle-Tacoma Shipyard. The vessel was delivered to the Navy in Sept. of 1941 for service in World War II. The ship was later sold to private investors in 1951 and was wrecked and scrapped in 1962. (Argentum)

Annual meeting of the American Legion, Edward B. Rhodes Post's Last Man Club, Hotel Winthrop, on December 3, 1941. Three empty chairs are draped with American flags and 19 men sit and stand by them. The draped chairs are in honor of Club members who have died. The Club was organized December 5, 1938 by World War I veterans who were past Commanders of the Post. A bottle of 1917 Hennessey Five Star cognac was set aside for the last surviving member to drink a toast to his comrades. The first to die was Tacoma Mayor Dr. John Siegle on April 13, 1939. The sole survivor was Capt. Chester Chastek. By February of 1992, he had outlived all his fellow club members. He died February 23, 1997 at the age of 97.

On March 19, 1942, Frances Anderson (right) and Mabel Eskildsen did their patriotic duty when they carried their own packages as they boarded a Tacoma transit bus, rather than having their purchases delivered to their homes by the store. Faced with the national need to conserve rubber, oil, gasoline, paper, and man power, the Tacoma Retail Trade Bureau was encouraging the public to do their part to save our resources. Thousands of stickers similar to those on the women's boxes were prepared and pasted on packages that customers were willing to carry themselves. TPL-1977 (T.Times 3/19/1942 p.4)

The Most Rev. Gerald Shaughnessy, the bishop of Seattle, leads the outdoor processional to Holy Rosary Church on October 19, 1941. The Holy Rosary parish is celebrating their Golden, 50th, anniversary. The bishop's train is held by altar boy Donald Coyne. The Beverly Theater at 916-918 Broadway was named after the daughter of Mike Barovic, the theater's manager, and opened in 1934. The Building, which had been home to the Colonial Theater, was completely remodeled in 1931, with a shiny black vitrolite and nickel-silver exterior. The Beverly was replaced by the Telenews Theater in 1945, and the building was demolished in 1988.

Marjorie Cain, wife of the Mayor, and son Harry P. Cain II (Buzzy) at (Old) City Hall for the installation of city officials, including Mayor Harry P. Cain, reelected to a full term in March, 1942. This would be Mayor Cain's first full four year term. He had previously been elected, in 1940, to fill the last two years of Dr. John Siegle's term after his death in office. Cain had lost in the 1940 primary to Dr. G.B. Kerstetter, a former Senator. When Kerstetter died just days before the election, Cain's name was placed on the ballot. He defeated former mayor Melvin G. Tennent, who hotly contested the election. (T. Times 6/1/1942, pg. 1)

Mayor Harry P. Cain at flag-draped podium on stage at Jason Lee Junior High School, as he leads a March 31, 1942 rally to sell war bonds. Tacoma's business community was urged to support the bond drive. C.A. Erdahl and Ted Brown were among those seated behind Mayor Cain. Over 1800 Tacoma and Pierce County businessmen crowded into the auditorium to hear the message about how to support the war and avoid inflation. Employers were urged to set a good example by purchasing bonds with company profits and to set up a payroll allotment plan so that workers could invest their extra income as well. This served a two fold purpose, it enriched the war chest and stalled inflation by investing the extra purchasing power of employees working in defense industries. ALBUM 13. (T. On May 16, 1942, an everyday game of marbles among a group of boys is captured by the photographer; except that these Japanese American boys, Tasuo Matsuda, Yoshinori Kondo and Hira Matsudo, are being held at "Camp Harmony," an assembly center in Puyallup for the evacuation and relocation of Seattle and Tacoma area residents of Japanese ancestry. Over 7,000 of them, including 1200 from Tacoma, were detained there from April 28 - September 12, 1942 before being shipped out to Minidoka Relocation Center in Southern Idaho. They lived in makeshift barracks divided into "apartments," one per family. The furnishings consisted of one army cot per person. There was no running water. Toilets, showers, mess halls and laundry room were communal and located a walk away. Privacy was non existent. The Japanese tried to keep life as normal as possible for the children, forming their own schools when the U.S. government provided none. (T. Times 4/30/1942, pg. 9)

On June 3, 1942, "Gray Ladies" from Fort Lewis presented the first of a series of afternoon radio request programs at station KMO, located in the Keyes building. The programs were being given for the patients at Fort Lewis. The Gray Ladies were part of the Red Cross Hospital and Recreation Service; the Gray Lady nickname referred to their gray uniform. At the luncheon after the June 6, 1942 Commencement exercises at the College of Puget Sound, Dr. Edward H. Todd was presented with a number of gifts thanking him for his 29 years of service as president of the college. Dr. Todd and his wife Florence are pictured holding pieces of a silver tea service, a gift from the faculty. He was also presented with the book that he is holding, a bound volume of testimonial letters from 250 associates and friends. In the background is a framed enlargement of a colored photo of Jones Hall, the center of the college and where his office was located. Three Tacoma chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution (the Mary Ball, Virginia Dare and Elizabeth Forey) enjoyed a delicious luncheon in the Hotel Winthrop's Crystal Ballroom when they honored Washington State Regent, Mrs. Starr Sherman of Walla Walla, on October 27, 1941. Seated above were Mrs. C.C. Mellinger, Mary Ball chapter regent, Mrs. Sherman, and Margaret Long, Elizabeth Forey chapter regent with the others in the photograph not identified. Mrs. Sherman was making an official visit to Tacoma and would later pay similar visits to Grays Harbor and Chehalis as well as northern chapters around the Sound. Former State Senator and College of Puget Sound history professor Walter Davis, for alumni magazine. Hat in hand, Sen. Davis poses on the brick steps leading to Jones Hall on the campus of the College of Puget Sound. He represented the people of the 27th District in the State Legislature for eight consecutive terms from 1913-1929. All the while he remained a college professor, having come to CPS in 1907 to teach history and political science. He was a member of the Board of Curators of the Historical Society since 1914, a member of the Tacoma Park Board from 1927-32 and a director of Central Bank since the bank's founding. Sen.
