When work became slack during the winter of 1939, Paul Danford (far right), his wife, Eleanor, and his brother, Tom, went into business for themselves. The national craze for Chinese checkers had created a local demand for Chinese checkers boards. By April of 1939, the Danfords had manufactured and sold over 5,000 boards out of their home workshop. They were so successful that they expanded into bird houses, napkin holders, and garden ornaments. (T. Times, 4/5/ 1939 p. 2).

The span was initially sprung 4 to 5 feet out of line, but it sprang back all but 10 inches of the distance. The bridge was dedicated in May of 1939. This second Hylebos Bridge replaced a single-leaf, bascule drawbridge that had been built in 1925. The Hylebos Bridge became disabled in January of 2001, and has been stuck in the upright position ever since. (T. Times 4/6/1939 p.18)

In April of 1939 the newspaper graphologist Andrienne analysed Harry P. Cain's handwriting for her column in the Tacoma Times. At the time Mr. Cain was festival director for Tacoma's celebration of the Washington Golden Jubilee. She saw in his handwriting a person with "unusual ability and dynamic force." Readers of the Times could have their handwriting analyzed for a mere dime by filling out a coupon. Harry P. Cain went on to became Tacoma's mayor the following year and after WWII he was elected U.S. Senator. (T.Times, 4-21-39, p.3)
