ca. 1936. A lift designed by American Manufacturing being used in the timber industry. It appears that the platform is loaded with boards while in the ground level position. It is then lifted up to where the boards can travel down the conveyer belt. American Manufacturing designed elevator equipment for every lifting requirement. ca. 1936. Doctors and attendants in Tacoma General Hospital operating room, circa 1936. Large windows and skylights supplied natural light; which, along with the operating lights, flooded the operating table. Several large tanks, right, supplied oxygen and probably gaseous anesthesia. A curved stand held operating instruments and several bowls sat on stands. By the mid 1930's, the new Heidbrink anesthetic machine and uniform sterilization of instruments and equipment had reached Tacoma. (filed with Argentum)

ca. 1936. Exterior view of Tacoma General Hospital with an ambulance parked in front, ca. 1936. The original $100,000 hospital, front, opened in 1915. It was designed by the architectural firm of Heath and Gove. It had a capacity for 150 beds and was virtually fireproof. The East wing, or "C" Wing, opened in 1926, Sutton, Whitney & Dugan architects. It brought the hospital's capacity to 250 beds. (filed with Argentum) ("A House of Mercy" by Mildred Bates, RN)

ca. 1936. African white deer at Point Defiance zoo. The deer, called white fallow deer, are natives of South Africa. They were born in captivity in the Portland zoo and were a gift from that city. They are the 6th variety of deer to be added to the zoo's deer pens. The deer retain their white coat all year and weigh over 200 pounds when fully grown. Spectators called them more graceful and alert than the other varieties. (T. Times 2/4/1936, pg. 14)

Stanley L. Rosso opened the Rosso Radio Company store at 706 South 38th Street in 1931. In this photograph from January, 1936 there are two washing machines on display outside the store, an "A B C" washer to the left and a "Maytag" to the right. Stanley Rosso remained in business at this address until WWII. After the war, he opened a new store, the Rosso TV & Appliance Company, at 756 South 38th St. one block over from his old store. This store closed around 1958.

The Rosso Radio Company store at 706 South 38th Street, owned by Stanley Rosso, carried a wide selection of large appliances, including washing machines, refrigerators, and upright vacuum cleaners. The "Easy" washer in the center of this photograph from January 1936 could be purchased for $54.50, or $1 per week on time. The cashiers window is at the back of the store. Stanley Rosso remained in business at this location until WWII.

ca. 1936. Estelle (Mrs. J.C.) Gould and daughter Jedell. Estelle sits on padded bench under arched window surrounded by wood spool design and holds a cat. Jedell stands on bench to left. The background appears to be the interior of the Yorktheimer mansion at 27 Broadway. The home was demolished in 1959 to make room for the construction of Belmont Terrace, an apartment building. The interiors were sold to Steve Pease who incorporated them into his restaurant "Steve's Gay 90's." Mrs. Gould was one of the Yorktheimers four daughters.
