Oars up! Seven girls prepare to enjoy Lake Devereaux as they learn to maneuver the large dragon-headed rowboat in mid-July of 1970. All are properly wearing life vests. The girls were part of a large contingent of 250 attending the Girl Scouts camp throughout the summer; there were also 140 girls attending the Camp Fire camp as well. The O.D.I. camps began on June 22nd. As an added note, the five canoes pictured in the background and foreground were Willits canoes, built by Earl and Floyd Willits on Day Island. Photograph ordered by the Tacoma-Pierce County Opportunity & Development, Inc. (TNT 6-7-70, A-17 - article) (Additional information provided by a reader)

This large group of unidentified airline stewardesses posed in the bright sunshine on July 7, 1970, at the Rodeway Inn, 6802 South Sprague Avenue, after receiving their wings. Most of the women were wearing the blue-and-white uniforms and white gloves of the Flying Tiger Line. The Flying Tigers were the first scheduled air cargo airline, but in the 1970's they also supplied military contract charter service from Travis Air Force Base in California to Japan. The airline formed in 1945 and ceased operation in 1989. It got its name from the Flying Tigers fighter unit of World War II. (Color photograph ordered by the Flying Tiger Line.)

Kitchen cabinets on display. This is believed to be the home of Bob Bartron. An example of fine craftsmanship in the Fircrest home of Bob Bartron was found in the display of abundant kitchen cabinets. 1970 Richards stock footage. Progress report on "Park Plaza South" parking garage. By June of 1970, construction was going at a good clip on the new multi-storied concrete garage set approximately between So. 12-13th & Pacific & Commerce Sts. Designed by local architects Lea, Pearson & Richards, the site had its groundbreaking in November of 1969. It would celebrate its grand opening on November 5, 1970. The garage would offer 381 parking spots; however, unlike the increasingly popular Tacoma Mall, drivers would have to pay to park.

Progress photographs. By mid-June, 1970, the (National) Bank of Washington Plaza tower had shot up to at least 21 stories, bypassing Puget Sound National Bank as the tallest building in town. Designed by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merill and utilizing 5 million pounds of reinforcing steel and 23,000 cubic yards of concrete, the tower would even have its own 350 kw emergency power generator. The law firm of Gordon, Honeywell, Malanca, Johnson & Peterson had already requested the top floor of the building for their offices. Bank administrative offices would occupy the first 12 floors with the Tacoma Main Banking Center on the mezzanine level. Photograph ordered by Donald M. Drake Co., Portland. Large round pit will become the plaza's water fountain. The high-rise building is set back from busy Pacific Ave. by some 80 feet. The building had just been "topped" on June 12th with the hoisting of a living 15-foot Douglas fir onto the roof. This traditional ceremony signified structural completion of the now 24-story bank building. The tree would later be given to the Tacoma School District for planting on the site of the new Henry Foss High School. Photograph ordered by Donald M. Drake Co., Portland. (TNT 6-14-70, p. 1, B-9)

The front window display of Woolworth's heavily advertised the store's "Golden Fried Chicken" to-go in June, 1970. Signs hanging on the window and in the store's interior advised that the chicken could be purchased by the bucket, bag or piece. The chicken would be kept hot by use of "Hot Sak," probably insulated bags, or in paper buckets. A female mannequin in apron poses in the window with a sign indicating mom would appreciate a day off from cooking, a hint that fried chicken would be a good substitute.
