Viva was issuing a challenge to customers to compare their product with others; the customer would either get a free big roll of Viva if she hadn't tried it before or if already a Viva buyer, get a free roll with the purchase of one roll. Informal portrait of bank president, Earl H. Dryden. Mr. Dryden was the head of a newly opened downtown bank, Tacoma Commercial Bank, located across the street from the Main Post Office. The staff of six prided themselves on being a local independent bank who had faith in the city's central business district. Wearing sequined outfits of blue and green and proudly carrying their batons were the young ladies of the Syncopations Baton Club who posed for a group portrait on April 18, 1972, at the Fruitland Grange. Saint Luke's Antiques Show committee members met at the home of Judge and Mrs. Hardyn B. Soule on April 12, 1972, to discuss the upcoming annual event. Saint Luke's Episcopal Church sold china, crystal, furniture, cut glass, and other antiques during this springtime sale. This will be the church's 22nd antiques show; it is scheduled for May 2-3 at the parish hall. 1972 Daffodil Parade. This entry from St. Regis Paper Co. with its enormous daffodils won the Mayor's Trophy for best use of the flower in the Grand Floral Parade. There were a total of 75,000 golden daffodils on the float. Attendants on the float were possibly employees or employee family members of St. Regis. (TNT 4-9-72, A-4, B-3)

1972 Daffodil Parade. Garnering second place in the "Other Festivals" division was this entry from the Portland Rose Festival accompanied by the Royal Rosarians. A small old-fashioned plane, apparently made of golden daffodils, rests above blue skies and fluffy clouds. Her female "pilot" waves to the waiting crowd.

1972 Daffodil Parade. Winner of the Grand Award in the 1972 Grand Floral Parade was the entry from the Sumner Community which depicted a 15-foot high figure of Betsy Ross sewing stars on a giant flag. The 30-foot long float held some 40,000 daffodils. Sumner is located in the heart of the Puyallup Valley and the float would continue its parade march down Sumner's Main Street. (TNT 4-9-72, B-1)

1972 Daffodil Parade. Tacoma's weather had a bit of everything for the 39th annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival parade. Brilliant sunshine, rain squalls, gusty winds, and hail/snow greeted the thousands assembled on Saturday, April 8th. Sheer raincoats covered the beautiful gowns of the festival's princesses riding on the Puyallup Community's Princess float pictured above; even the Daffodilians marching along wore clear rain jackets over their bright yellow coats. 1972 Daffodil Parade. Police units from both the Tacoma Police Department and Pierce County Sheriff were an integral part of the annual Daffodil Parade. Proceeding down wet Pacific Avenue on April 8, 1972, was believed to be a contingent from the Tacoma Police Department. The motorcycle officers were in "V" formation.

1972 Daffodil Parade. "Lady of the Lake" was the name of the Olympia Capital Lakefair float in the 1972 Grand Floral Parade. This rosy entry captured second place in the "Communities and cities over 5,000 population" division.

1972 Daffodil Parade. Close-up of prize-winning St. Regis Paper Co. float. A bouquet of giant daffodils is the focus of the float, seemingly much larger than the attendants waving to the throngs waiting on Pacific Avenue. St. Regis was a perennial winner in the Grand Floral Parade; in 1972, it won the Mayor's Trophy for best use of daffodils.

1972 Daffodil Parade. The first float in the annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival parade has traditionally been the Queen's Float, a non-competitive entry of Tacoma City Light. In 1972, designer Graydon Bailey, preparing for the often unpredictable spring weather, even equipped the festival queen, Paula Achziger, with a bubble top umbrella. 58,000 golden daffodils were used to blanket the float. 1972 Daffodil Parade. View of Sweepstakes winner as it passes by Dammeier Printing, the Olympus Hotel and Robblee's Safe & Lock Co. on Pacific Ave. This entry from the Olympia Brewing Co. won the coveted FTD Sweepstakes Award for best overall float in the 1972 Grand Floral parade. It used 45,000 daffodils and an array of greenery to promote the festival's theme, "Proudly We Hail." The Olympia Brewing Co. further extended the theme to include "Proudly We Hail the Great Northwest," with deer, rabbits, mice and a skunk sharing the landscape. Water from the float's own tank provided the liquid needed for the float's waterfall. Waving to the crowds were Jane Adams and Pat Strahl, who stood within lavender blossoms that opened and closed to the delight of spectators. (TNT 4-9-72, A-1, A-4, B-3)

1972 Daffodil Parade. Neither rain nor wind nor sleet slowed the procession of jeeps rumbling down Pacific Avenue in the 1972 Daffodil Parade. The colorful jeeps belonged to members of the Webfooters Jeep Club. Directly behind the last of the jeeps was the Civil Defense bus.

1972 Daffodil Parade. Making an appeal for "Universal Peace" was the entry from the Fife-Milton Daffodil Association. Doves "flew" over the yellow and pink blossoms of this award-winning float. This lovely float won the Judges' Trophy for originality. (TNT 4-9-72, A-4, B-7)

In 1972, Crystal Corbin (far left) and Susan Pettit (far right) were hostesses at the new restaurant with the long name - Clinkerdagger, Bickerstaff & Pett's Public House - located on Ruston Way. Beth Pritchard (third from right) was one of the waitresses. Employees of Clinkerdagger's wore outfits reminiscent of pub fashions worn in London of the 1800's. Many of the young ladies shown above in April of 1972, shortly after the restaurant's opening, were students at the University of Puget Sound. In April of 1972, Steven Braverman, Shana McNally and Susie Haas, dressed in the latest Spring fashions, posed by a brick wall near the Country Store in Lakewood. The youngsters, sporting bright smiles, stuffed animals and a baseball mitt, were prepared to walk down the style show aisle. Many, if not all, of the waitresses and hostesses were selected from the campus of the University of Puget Sound. Crystal Corbin and Susan Pettit (both standing extreme left) share smiles with their co-workers; the wait staff wore ruffled skirts and blouses, white stockings, and caps resembling the clothing of 19th century London pub employees. The Sunnen Crane Service has just finished lowering the second of the two halves of the home onto the wooden pilings. The prefabricated one-level home had a rough cedar shake roof and light brown exterior siding. This modular home was manufactured by Evergreen State Builders and was on sale for $16,000. Double doors, walk-in closets, porches and wrought iron railings were some of the many amenities offered in the 1,440 square foot home. Admission to the modular home was free with the inexpensive purchase of the 1972 Tacoma Home Show ticket. After the home show run, the modular home would be moved to Evergreen's display on I-5 at the Fife interchange. (TNT 3-27-72, p. 6)

Manufactured by Evergreen State Builders, the home was trucked in two separate sections to the site of the annual Tacoma Home Show at the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. The 1,440 square foot 3-bedroom home had a price of $16,000. Thousands of home show visitors would eventually tour this home during the week-long spring exhibition. (TNT 3-27-72, p. 6)

Customers at Honan's Restaurant, 737-41 Saint Helens Avenue in Tacoma, were invited to help chose the popular restaurant's "Irish Rose" during their 3-day Saint Patrick's Day celebration in 1972. Each cash register receipt was good for one vote until 10 pm on Thursday, March 16; the queen would be named and crowned an hour later. Bob Honan, his back to the camera, tended bar in front of the contestants' names and large photographs. The women competing for the title were: (l to r) Sherrie Connolly, Monica Michel and Colleen O'Brien. Unfortunately, there was no mention found in the News Tribune of the outcome of this competition. On the 17th, Honan's made their annual Saint Patrick Day's transatlantic phone call to the restaurant's namesake in Ennis, County Clare. According to an entry in the 1972 City Directory, the company had dispatched emergency road service. Fife Towing was located at 4310 Pacific Hwy. E. in Fife. Sea trials. The "Voyager," a 237-foot tuna seiner, underwent successful sea trials in March of 1972 after launching ceremonies at Tacoma Boatbuilding on February 12, 1972. She ran into some trouble just prior to her departure to San Diego on March 27, 1972, when she ran aground on a river bar at the mouth of the Puyallup River. The "Voyager" had been on her way to the City Waterway to load fuel for the first leg of her trip when the mishap occurred. She was stuck for more than six hours before floating off on high tide. Fortunately, there was no damage caused by the grounding, and the ship was able to refuel and head south the following morning. (TNT 3-28-72, p.4 -article on grounding)
In March of 1972 Elaine Burt, the newly crowned Tacoma Home Show Queen, smiled prettily while perched on the back of a llama. Her placid companion, who also appears to be smiling, was on display during the 26th edition of the home show held at the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse from March 28 through April 4, 1972.
