Exterior view of the home that Wollander Farwest Homes and Wollander Better Builder Plans designed and built for Tacoma's first annual home show; this house was on display at College of Puget Sound's new Memorial Fieldhouse gymnasium. This house was designed and built in about three weeks, people who attended the home show could register to win this home and landscaped yard, which was valued at $8,500 (T.N.T., 4/26/49, p. 26).

Fife High School Senior Class, News Tribune, Mr. Knight. Sisty-six students were graduated at Fife High School June 1, 1949. Seniors are seated on stage, and the audience watches from the basketball floor and side galleries. Names are listed in the newspaper. Pilgrim statue of Our Lady of Fatima in St. Joseph's Hospital, St. Joseph's School of Nursing, Sister Marie Geralds. The renowned "Pilgrim Virgin" statue of Our Lady of Fatima arrived Sunday, May 29, 1949, at St. Patrick's Church for two days and two nights on its "Crusade for Peace" across America. Carved from cedar by Thedim, Portugal's foremost sculptor, it is a replica of the statue of the Blessed Virgin which stood in the Basilica in the Cova da Iria, 60 miles north of Lisbon where the Mother of God appeared to three small children in 1917. Chervenak of the architectural firm Lance, McGuire and Muri. Washington Hardware Company had their retail business in Tacoma's downtown business district; the store had two entrances located at: 924 Pacific Avenue and 923 Commerce Street.

Western singer and motion picture actor Gene Autry demonstrates trick riding on his horse Champion during a show at the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse on July 15, 1949. Champion Jr. also joined his famed sire on stage later that evening. The 12-act western musical variety show was sponsored jointly by the Tacoma Athletic Commission and the College of Puget Sound. Mr. Autry's troupe of western motion picture stars and radio entertainers included M.C. assistant to Mr. Autry, comedian Pat Buttram and vaudevillian Rufe Davis. On June 28, 1949 Mrs. Beth Giseburt was pictured taking inventory of the Tacoma/Pierce County Red Cross Chapter's supplies for hospital emergency, home service or disaster relief. The volunteer staff of 30 in the production department, headed by Mrs. Giseburt, worked more than 8,100 hours between September 1948 and June 1949. They planned to be on vacation, however, July and August. The Red Cross of Tacoma dates to 1898. (TNT, 7/5/1949, p.17)

Elks, Emmett T. Anderson, Grand Exalted Ruler of the Elks.Emmett T. Anderson, Grand Exalted Ruler of the Elks, and his wife Lucile are welcomed home by a parade along Pacific Avenue. The convertible they are riding in has been decorated with sprays of gladiola flowers and fabric. They are escorted by Past Exalted Rulers of Tacoma Lodge number 174. Mr. Anderson was appointed to the Elks war commission when the United States entered World War II. He extended the service of the Elks to individuals in uniform all over the Pacific slope, Alaska and Hawaii. He organized the committees which met the needs of repatriated prisoners of war from the Philippines and Japan, furnishing food, medicine, clothing, transportation and cash as each case required. Elks, Emmett T. Anderson, Grand Exalted Ruler of the Elks. Mr. Anderson doffs his hat to the crowd as he and wife Lucile are escorted downtown in a parade held in his honor. Emmett T. Anderson was unanimously elected Grand Exalted Ruler of the Elks Order of the United States at their national convention in Cleveland in July, 1949. He was a past exalted ruler of his lodge in Tacoma and a former district deputy grand exalted ruler for the Washington southwest area. He was also president of Anderson Printing Company. On July 15, 1949 a group of unidentified young patients at the Tacoma Indian Hospital, also known as Cushman Hospital, received a surprise visit from Gene Autry, the singing cowboy. A symbol of clean entertainment in western movies, radio and records (and later on television), Mr. Autry had flown into the Seattle-Tacoma Airport earlier that day at the controls of his private Beachcraft twin engine plane. He was in Tacoma as headliner of a 12-act western Musical variety show that was being presented that evening in the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. (TNT 7-15-49, p. 13, 7-16-49, p. 3) ALBUM 8.

Ordered by Charles F.A. Mann. This is believed to be the "Yolande Bertin," newly launched fishing boat that has entered the water outside the Tacoma Boat Building ways building on June 9, 1949. The boat would be docked at the boat building company for the completion of the interior work and a new boat would be started in the ways building. Western singer and motion picture actor Gene Autry with his group, the Melody Ranch Hands, during a broadcast from studio A at KMO radio in Tacoma, on July 15, 1949. Mr. Autry was appearing on the show hosted by Cherokee Jack and his Western Rhythm Ridin' Wranglers which broadcast Monday through Friday from 5 to 5:30 pm. The actor/singer, his horse "Champion," and 24 other film stars and radio entertainers performed that evening at the new College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. In July of 1949 contractor Bob Joshlin brought in a 120-foot crane from Northwest Hauling Company to remove the tower from the Central Lutheran Church. The church at 1001 South G was built in 1889 as the First Presbyterian Church. The tower had been condemned due to deterioration during its 50-year watch over downtown Tacoma. Man apparently drowned on 15th Street Dock, Studio spec. Police officers worked more than one hour in an attempt to revive an unidentified drowning victim June 9, 1949. The man apparently fell or leaped into the City Waterway from the bridge near South 15th and Dock Streets. The man was dragged from the water by Joe Parrent, an employee of a firm located near the dock. L-R, Russell Richardson, Glenn Nyland, Harry Fleming, Wilson Miller, Dick Davidson and Richard Mace.
