CLE ELUM--The Autorest Cafe, known to travelers for its pastry and a back bar that came 'round Cape Horn, will change ownership on Sept. 15 after being in the same family since 1918.
Many cross-state travelers have stopped at the venerable place, operated for the past 30 years by Lois and Lyle Swenson of Cle Elum. They have sold the restaurant to Ron and Donna Voight of the Tacoma area. Voight has been with Safeway.
The massive back bar of dark, Honduras mahogany is the dominant piece. Visitors who sat at the counter and saw themselves in the bar's broad mirrors wouldn't know its history unless they read the sign.
Hand-carved and built in Alabama in 1897 by the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co., the bar was shipped around Cape Horn to Seattle, where it embellished the old Mecca Saloon on First Avenue in 1915. The bar was moved and installed in the Autorest Cafe, Cle Elum, in 1918.

Members of the sales, service and office crew of Kerr Motors in Bremerton. The group portrait of the staff, 21 men and three women, was taken to commemorate the Grand Opening March 6, 1936 of Kerr's new modern one stop service station on 4th St., near Washington Ave. Pictured left to right in the picture are, front row, William Weber, Sig Ness, Lincoln Morse, Paul Peirson, Harold Johnson and Earl Spiecker. Middle row- Everett West, Leslie Mottram. Les Klesper, Lorieta Mogford, S.L. Kerr-owner, Marie Gilbert, Frank McCarty, Charles Taylor and Loren Brown. On November 13, 1935, Mr. and Mrs. G. A. King posed with a 50 year old painting, an heirloom, which they were able to save from their room during the fast moving fire at the Golden Hotel on Pacific Ave. in Bremerton. Most of their other belongings were lost to the fire. The fire started in the kitchen of the ground floor Golden Cafe and quickly spread to the living quarters above. For Bremerton Sun. On November 13, 1935, fire broke out in the kitchen of the Golden Cafe in Bremerton, quickly spreading to the remainder of the building, including the Golden Hotel. This photograph was taken from the east side, showing the damage to the Golden Cafe, Hotel and the neighboring Crows Nest Cafe. More than 30 guests escaped being trapped by the fast moving fire. The building was already scheduled to be torn down and replaced. In addition to the Golden Cafe and Hotel, the building was also home to the Pacific Drug Co. and the Gate Confectionery. The 1937 City Directory lists this location as vacant; in 1938, it is listed as Bert & Ray Service Station, owned by Bert Nielson & Rayfield Pierantozzi. Light snow on ground, large Victorian house and smaller one. Directional signs put up by AAA point to "National Park 54" (Mount Rainier Nat'l. Park 54 miles) and Tacoma "City Center 2."

A Griffin Fuel Company driver filled the heating oil tank at the Sears Exhibition Home at 1920 North Union Avenue on October 9, 1937, the day before the house opened for public viewing. The building was not a Sears "kit" house. It was designed by Stanley T. Shaw, architect, and built with material purchased in the Tacoma area. By building this demonstration house, Sears hoped to show what could be done locally to create a modern, comfortable and convenient home. All the furnishings throughout the building's eight rooms were supplied by Sears, as were the heating, electrical and plumbing supplies. Over three October Sundays, nearly 16,000 people toured the house. (T. Times, 10/9/1937, p. 5)

Griffin Fuel began business in 1889 as a horse drawn moving company for any kind of commodities. By 1904, Griffin Fuel had moved to this location and focused in on the fuel business. They delivered and sold fuel in the forms of oil, coal, wood and sawdust. Pat Cardin, recently appointed manager of Griffin burner & diesel oil business, helped Ed Griffin design this new style oil tank delivery truck. Its design included a centrifugal silent pump.
