But Elena's seven-year-old daughter, Dana, had to remain behind in the Soviet Union. Elena told the Washington State Law and Justice Committee that she deeply misses her daughter, and that she and her husband have applied to Soviet authorities to allow Dana to come to the United States. A resolution asking that Dana be allowed to come to the USA was introduced into the State Senate.

A Sad But Hopeful Look.....Pastor Lynn Farnum (Trinity Presbyterian Church), no stranger to the life on Tacoma's Hilltop and the plight of its children, gives a thoughtful glance down a stretch of streets on the Hill today as she joined a concerned group of local pastors and church leaders who briefly toured the area following a press conference they called to express concern and call attention to the Children's Initiative which they support. In the background (right arm raised) another spokesperson for the group, Rev. Dave Alger (Ex. Director of Associated Ministries) explains the sights to other members of the group.

"I live on K street and I'm at war!" With those words Mary Miller, a hilltop resident and parent of 3 school-age children, introduced herself to a classroom of other concerned citizens during an hour-long workshop for "Safe Streets" held at Mt Tahoma High School this evening. Several Hundred (one count had it at 500) folks met in various classroom settings to discuss strategies and vent their fears and frustrations in dealing with the cities problems of late and assigning each participant an "action front" theme to concentrate and educate upon. Miller, who listens to a speaker emphasize the need for group action, sits next to her "Safe Streets" sweatshirt.

As early evening moves into dusk....
19-year-old Tacoma resident Janine Absten (right) and 19-year-old Sean Brown (Tacoma) light candles as part of a protest (and vigil) that was joined by 150 others at Owen Beach this evening. The group was concerned by the recent oil spill in Alaska and spent the time discussing the issues surrounding the incident and voicing feelings thereof. The group, with many families and children present created no problems for park officials who earlier were concerned that the protest might grow out of hand, possibly resulting in damages. After the gathering members left the park.
