Saint Luke's Antiques Show committee members met at the home of Judge and Mrs. Hardyn B. Soule on April 12, 1972, to discuss the upcoming annual event. Saint Luke's Episcopal Church sold china, crystal, furniture, cut glass, and other antiques during this springtime sale. This will be the church's 22nd antiques show; it is scheduled for May 2-3 at the parish hall. 1972 Daffodil Parade. This entry from St. Regis Paper Co. with its enormous daffodils won the Mayor's Trophy for best use of the flower in the Grand Floral Parade. There were a total of 75,000 golden daffodils on the float. Attendants on the float were possibly employees or employee family members of St. Regis. (TNT 4-9-72, A-4, B-3)

1972 Daffodil Parade. Garnering second place in the "Other Festivals" division was this entry from the Portland Rose Festival accompanied by the Royal Rosarians. A small old-fashioned plane, apparently made of golden daffodils, rests above blue skies and fluffy clouds. Her female "pilot" waves to the waiting crowd.

1972 Daffodil Parade. Winner of the Grand Award in the 1972 Grand Floral Parade was the entry from the Sumner Community which depicted a 15-foot high figure of Betsy Ross sewing stars on a giant flag. The 30-foot long float held some 40,000 daffodils. Sumner is located in the heart of the Puyallup Valley and the float would continue its parade march down Sumner's Main Street. (TNT 4-9-72, B-1)

1972 Daffodil Parade. Tacoma's weather had a bit of everything for the 39th annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival parade. Brilliant sunshine, rain squalls, gusty winds, and hail/snow greeted the thousands assembled on Saturday, April 8th. Sheer raincoats covered the beautiful gowns of the festival's princesses riding on the Puyallup Community's Princess float pictured above; even the Daffodilians marching along wore clear rain jackets over their bright yellow coats. 1972 Daffodil Parade. Police units from both the Tacoma Police Department and Pierce County Sheriff were an integral part of the annual Daffodil Parade. Proceeding down wet Pacific Avenue on April 8, 1972, was believed to be a contingent from the Tacoma Police Department. The motorcycle officers were in "V" formation.

1972 Daffodil Parade. "Lady of the Lake" was the name of the Olympia Capital Lakefair float in the 1972 Grand Floral Parade. This rosy entry captured second place in the "Communities and cities over 5,000 population" division.

1972 Daffodil Parade. Close-up of prize-winning St. Regis Paper Co. float. A bouquet of giant daffodils is the focus of the float, seemingly much larger than the attendants waving to the throngs waiting on Pacific Avenue. St. Regis was a perennial winner in the Grand Floral Parade; in 1972, it won the Mayor's Trophy for best use of daffodils.

1972 Daffodil Parade. The first float in the annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival parade has traditionally been the Queen's Float, a non-competitive entry of Tacoma City Light. In 1972, designer Graydon Bailey, preparing for the often unpredictable spring weather, even equipped the festival queen, Paula Achziger, with a bubble top umbrella. 58,000 golden daffodils were used to blanket the float. 1972 Daffodil Parade. View of Sweepstakes winner as it passes by Dammeier Printing, the Olympus Hotel and Robblee's Safe & Lock Co. on Pacific Ave. This entry from the Olympia Brewing Co. won the coveted FTD Sweepstakes Award for best overall float in the 1972 Grand Floral parade. It used 45,000 daffodils and an array of greenery to promote the festival's theme, "Proudly We Hail." The Olympia Brewing Co. further extended the theme to include "Proudly We Hail the Great Northwest," with deer, rabbits, mice and a skunk sharing the landscape. Water from the float's own tank provided the liquid needed for the float's waterfall. Waving to the crowds were Jane Adams and Pat Strahl, who stood within lavender blossoms that opened and closed to the delight of spectators. (TNT 4-9-72, A-1, A-4, B-3)

1972 Daffodil Parade. Neither rain nor wind nor sleet slowed the procession of jeeps rumbling down Pacific Avenue in the 1972 Daffodil Parade. The colorful jeeps belonged to members of the Webfooters Jeep Club. Directly behind the last of the jeeps was the Civil Defense bus.

1972 Daffodil Parade. Making an appeal for "Universal Peace" was the entry from the Fife-Milton Daffodil Association. Doves "flew" over the yellow and pink blossoms of this award-winning float. This lovely float won the Judges' Trophy for originality. (TNT 4-9-72, A-4, B-7)

Staff of Clinkerdagger, Bickerstaff & Pett's Public House. In 1972, Crystal Corbin (far left) and Susan Pettit (far right) were hostesses at the new restaurant with the long name - Clinkerdagger, Bickerstaff & Pett's Public House - located on Ruston Way. Beth Pritchard (third from right) was one of the waitresses. Employees of Clinkerdagger's wore outfits reminiscent of pub fashions worn in London of the 1800's. Many of the young ladies shown above in April of 1972, shortly after the restaurant's opening, were students at the University of Puget Sound. In April of 1972, Steven Braverman, Shana McNally and Susie Haas, dressed in the latest Spring fashions, posed by a brick wall near the Country Store in Lakewood. The youngsters, sporting bright smiles, stuffed animals and a baseball mitt, were prepared to walk down the style show aisle. Many, if not all, of the waitresses and hostesses were selected from the campus of the University of Puget Sound. Crystal Corbin and Susan Pettit (both standing extreme left) share smiles with their co-workers; the wait staff wore ruffled skirts and blouses, white stockings, and caps resembling the clothing of 19th century London pub employees. 1972 Richards stock footage. In 1972 the future multi-storied home of Floor Decorators by G.W. Paulson was being built close to the freeway at 7310 South Ash. Per their advertisement in the 1972 City Directory, the G.W. Paulson Co. had experience in the floor coverings business since 1921. Carpet, linoleum, tile and formica were sold by the firm and satisfaction was guaranteed. Radio dispatched sales reps would be glad to meet customers at either their homes or offices. Floor Decorators would celebrate its grand opening on June 11, 1972. The contemporary 20,600 square foot building with its modern showroom was actually located about So. 74th & Hosmer, near the 72nd St. entrance to I-5. The business, owned by Robert Paulson, had previously been located at So. 13th & "K" (Martin Luther King Jr. Way) for 17 years. (TNT full page ad 6-11-72, A-11; TNT 6-11-72, D-19 article)

1972 Daffodil Festival Queen. Wearing ceremonial garments is 17-year-old Wilson High School senior, Paula Achziger, who was crowned the 1972 Daffodil Festival Queen. She is holding a symbol of her office, a scepter, and cradling a bouquet of daffodils and ferns. Miss Achziger is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron F.J. Achziger who watched her selected out of 16 nominees, the largest court in the festival's history at that time. Lt. Gov. John Cherberg had the honor of placing the heavy queen's crown on the brown haired Miss Achziger during ceremonies on April 3, 1972, at Pacific Lutheran University's Olson Auditorium. Mrs. Robert Clinton was installed as Queen of Zora Temple, Daughters of the Nile in elaborate ceremonies at the Masonic Temple, 47 Saint Helens Ave., on March 25, 1972. Mrs. Clinton, in white jeweled gown, is pictured flanked by members of her royal court. One of the attractions of the upcoming spring Tacoma Home Show was the 1,440 square foot modular home erected outside the University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. The home was trucked to the site in two parts and assembled. A Sunnen crane is pictured above on March 23, 1972, in the process of lowering the second of the two sections on wood pilings. Bedroom - "Barcelona" model home. This may be the elegant master bedroom of the 3,350 square foot model home built for the 1972 Tacoma Home Show. Drawing upon Mediterranean influences, Evergreen State Builders made heavy use of gold and red tones in the design of this $50,000 luxury home. The master bedroom was actually a suite 16 x 32 feet with its own bath, walk-in closets and a dressing room. Magenta model home built for 1972 Tacoma Home Show. Built by Crest Builders in the Oxford development of Steilacoom, the "Magenta" was a contemporary one-story wood-framed home with two-car garage. Its kitchen, shown above in mid-March, 1972, presented a bright and modern look. Countertops, window dressings, clock and chair upholstery all had a cheerful mauve tone. The extensive use of white cabinetry and appliances, unique dining set and light floor covering probably made the kitchen area appear much larger than its actual size. Magenta model home. Located in the Oxford development in Old Steilacoom, the "Magenta," built by Leroy Crest of Crest Builders and open for touring during the 1972 Tacoma Home Show, fit snugly close to the ground on a wooded lot with landscaped front and back yards. Extensive amounts of beauty bark have been utilized to present a pleasing appearance. The L-shaped home came equipped with a double-car garage. Living room - "Barcelona" model home. The luxury home's living room is alive with colors of vibrant red and gold. Comfortable gold and white stuffed chairs and an extended patterned couch with accents of red and gold along with an ornate glass table with gold-toned supports make this sitting area a most pleasant spot to enjoy a drink or converse with friends. The wall-to-wall carpet is also deep red in tone, a color which is picked up by the window valances. The "Barcelona" was available for touring during the 26th annual Tacoma Home Show, March 28th-April 4th of 1972. Located in a "semi-custom" development near Chambers Creek Road in University Place, the home was listed for a then pricey $50,000.
