On October 30, 1941 troops of the 3rd Division's Infantry Battalion maintained close-order formation as they passed the Roxy Theater, turning from Broadway to march down South 9th Street. One of the largest crowds to ever watch a parade in Tacoma gathered to view the Army Day extravaganza. The parade of over 10,000 soldiers, with their support vehicles, stretched for over 6 miles. Crowds line the street on October 30, 1941, as men and artillery pass in formation during the Army parade. Over 10,000 soldiers would take part in the 2 hour parade through downtown Tacoma.

On October 30, 1941, downtown businesses were closed due to the massive two hour military parade making its way downtown. Following the parade, stores would throw open their doors for a once a year United Tacoma Days sale. Here bus and or streetcar employees meet with a coordinator, possibly to go over schedule changes made to deal with the increase of downtown traffic.

On September 4, 1942, the U.S.O. Club at 713-15 Commerce St. held its formal opening. Because the US military services were still segregated in 1942, the club was dedicated for the use of servicemen of color. Music, singing and dancing were part of the entertainment planned for the gala evening. The unidentified young women pictured here were dressed in long evening wear with corsages, while their unidentified escorts were wearing their dress uniforms. Governor Arthur B. Langlie shakes hands with director Ray C. Vaughn on September 4, 1942, at the formal opening and dedication of the new U.S.O. unit for servicemen of color on Commerce Street. The new U.S.O. facility filled a long felt need in Tacoma for a club to be used by servicemen of color from the Fort Lewis area. Director Vaughn thanked Mayor Cain for facilitating the addition of the center to U.S.O. operations in Tacoma. The photograph includes, L to R, front row: Unidentified, Mayor Harry P. Publicity for Community Chest. Dedication of U.S.O. club for servicemen of color at 715 Commerce on September 4, 1942. An enthusiastic audience welcomed the new center. Governor Arthur B. Langlie and Mayor Harry P. Cain were both on hand to assist with the dedication ceremonies. Publicity for Community Chest. Newly appointed U.S.O. club director Ray C. Vaughn addresses the large crowd gathered on September 4, 1942, for the dedication of the brand new U.S.O. opened to serve the recreational needs of servicemen of color during WWII in the Tacoma area. Mr. Vaughn was an outstanding athlete at Colgate University, served as athletic director of Atlanta University, taught health education in the New York City public schools and became the health education and recreational director for NYC schools before coming to Tacoma. The wedding was followed by a reception at the Steilacoom Lake home of the bride's aunt and uncle, Mrs. and Mrs. Otto H. Weller. Despite the early hour on the wedding, 10 a.m. on August 12, 1941, Owen Thomas Gallagher, the groom, and a group of friends tap a keg in the basement during the reception. The wedding of Gallagher and Georgann Leahey was held at the Holy Cross Church, 10th & Verde. The following reception was at the bride's parents' home at 3808 No. 33rd St. The other men pictured are possibly Best Man William Gallagher and ushers Robert Gallagher, James McMenamin and Philip Brockert. On November 13, 1940, David Larson (left) and George Tucker, two saxophone players from the 146th Field Artillery Band, tried to blow away the unidentified listeners attending the Enlisted Men's Dance at the Tacoma Armory. All three saxophone players in the band, including Dean Curtiss who was not pictured, were former members of leading dance bands. The 146th FA Band was supplying the music for the dance, the second in a series of dances. All men in uniform from McChord Field, Fort Lewis and Camp Murray were invited for the evening's entertainment; all area young women were invited to act as dance partners. TPL-1755 (T. The hills are covered with nearly a thousand seated spectators, present to view the show of military might. The 3rd Division, over 3,000 strong, would be parading for Washington's new Governor Langlie. The afternoon would be spent on close inspection of artillery and vehicles. (T. Times 3/6/1941, pg. 1)

The premiere of the film "Tugboat Annie Sails Again" was held in Tacoma on October 18, 1940. As part of the festivities, the stars were given the key to the historic City of Steilacoom, on Steilacoom's dock. Shown left to right are: Marjorie Cain, wife of Tacoma mayor Harry P. Cain, Ronald Reagan, Alan Hale, Sr., Marjorie Rambeau, Donald Crisp and Mrs. Margaret Rust. Miss Rambeau was a well-known actress who was a two-time Academy Awards nominee. She replaced Marie Dressler in the role of "Tugboat Annie" following Miss Dressler's death a short year after the first film's release. The MGM picture also starred Alan Hale, Sr., and Ronald Reagan, both of whom made the trip to Tacoma to celebrate the film's premiere. ALBUM 6.

Miss Rambeau and Mr. Hale starred in the sequel to "Tugboat Annie" while Miss Hopper, a longtime friend of Miss Rambeau, made a trip to Tacoma to interview the stars on live radio.
