Employees of the R.E. Anderson Co. gathered at the Tacoma Country & Golf Club on July 28, 1939, for a dinner party celebrating the company's 50th anniversary. There were many displays of beautiful flowers. 44 people are pictured above, including the honored guest Mrs. R.E. Anderson, front row 5th from left, her daughter and grandson. William H. Surrounded by a sea of cameras this Rhode Island Red posed regally with his winning ribbons at the poultry show held on November 30, 1939 after being declared the Grand Champion of All Breeds. The 45th annual show, sponsored by the Tacoma Poultry Association and the Rhode Island Red Club of America, was primarily for the Rhode Island Reds, although other breeds were also shown. As winner of the club's national show, the 9 month old cockerel was considered the finest of the breed in all of the US and Canada. The winning fowl's owner, Mrs. Charles F. Cummings of La Canada, California, was not present when the Grand Champion was announced; not expecting to win, she had gone shopping. (T. Times 12/1/1939, pg. 5; 11/27/1939, pg. 5)

Ladies from the Lakewood Community Club shake hands with dignitaries awaiting the opening of the Narrows Bridge, July 1, 1940. Because there were ribbon cutting ceremonies on both ends of the bridge, platforms were set up with folding chairs for honored guests. These women, wearing Celebration Hats, were prepared to cross the bridge on bicycles once the bridge was open to traffic shortly after noon on July 1, 1940. They, and the assorted dignitaries, were situated on the West end of the bridge, and would view Adm. E.B. Fenner of the Puget Sound Naval Station cut the official ribbons.

1940 Y.M.B.C. Water Carnival at Point Defiance. Top hatted man in costume standing next to a CBS microphone is believed to be Arnold Andreason, Carnival chairman. Over 50,000 spectators were expected at the Saturday afternoon carnival, which promised a four hour program of races, water skiing, thrills and spills. (T.Times, 7-1-40, p. 12)

Sixth Annual Daffodil Parade, April 1, 1939; prize winning "Sons of Italy" float. Couple seated under gondola canopy with a singing gondolier at front of float portraying the city of Venice, Italy. Italians were among Tacoma's many ethnic groups in the 1930s. The 1939 parade took 40 minutes to pass and was nearly 2 miles long. There were 18 bands and 24 floats using 750, 000 daffodils. (T. Champion Playfair Rockefeller, a Boston Bulldog, took first place in Group 6, Non-Sporting Dogs, at the two-day dog show held in the former Sears Roebuck Building, April 29-30, 1939. Over 50 varieties of dogs participated in the second annual All Breed Dog Show. The show was co-sponsored by the Tacoma Kennel Club and the Young Men's Business Club. (T. Times, 5/1/1939, p. 1).

The Morton Logger Jubilee jug band and friends. Cities all over the state were pulling out all the stops to celebrate Washington's 50 year anniversary of statehood and Morton was no exception. The Morton Loggers' Jubilee, scheduled to open September 2nd and end on Labor Day, however had a decided hillbilly flair. Some 3,000 Southern mountain people, mostly from Kentucky & West Virginia, would dramatize real old style hill life of the upper South. They would be trekking to Morton, leading hound dogs, carrying rifles and wearing coon skin caps. One of the highlights of the celebration would be a public hillbilly wedding, with food, dancin' and gun totin'. Morton, a logging and sawmill town, is on the Tilton River thirty-three miles east of Chehalis in central Lewis County. (T. Times 8/24/1939, pg. 8)

To the right are Pease Brothers wholesale automotive supplies at 708 Broadway, Titus Used Cars at 714, Mueller Harkins Motor Co. at 722 and Irwin Jones Motor Co. at 728. Across the street are Packard and Pontiac dealers. Broadway is decorated with bunting and banners in preparation for the July 22, 1939 Golden Jubilee Parade. All of Tacoma had been celebrating Washington state's 50th anniversary of statehood since July 16th. July 23rd would be the last official day to celebrate. TPL-6464

1906 Ford Model N belonging to Titus Motor Company outside the State Vehicle Safety Inspection Station during 1939's Washington Golden Jubilee celebration. The men are, left to right, Larry Pritchett of Associated Oil Co., Leon Titus at the wheel, Titus' business partner Lloyd Raab and Dick Frayne, superintendent of Titus Service Department. The vehicle is the personal property of Mr. Titus, who obtained it in a trade in for a new Ford in 1914. The vehicle will be featured in the pageant "Saga of the West" and the Jubilee Parade. (T. As a joke on July 20, 1939, Titus Ford Service Department superintendent Dick Frayne, behind the wheel of Leon Titus's 1906 Ford Model N, drove the antique into the State Vehicle Safety Inspection Station. Joe Thomas, director of the Station and veteran race driver, scratched his head wondering where would he put the red sticker if the car passed; the vehicle had no windshield. Enjoying the joke were white uniformed inspectors, as well as Lloyd Raab, behind vehicle in western hat, Leon Titus, second from right, and Larry Pritchett, right. On July 5, 1939, some Gyro Club members pose on the roof of the Winthrop Hotel modeling their diverse styles of Jubilee Hats. They are promoting the wearing of humorous hats to boost the Golden Jubilee celebration, July 16-23. The hats will be available in all colors, shapes and sizes in styles popular 50 years ago to add a little levity to the celebration. The prominent Pierce County residents are, left to right, Tacoma Chamber of Commerce manager T. A. Stevenson, County Commissioner John Schlarb, County Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Louise S. Taylor, Sheriff John Bjorklund and County Commissioner A.A. Rankin.

Civic leader Harry P. Cain with famous handwriting analyst Andrienne at the office of the Golden Jubilee Festival committee in April, 1939. Andrienne had some very kind words to say about Mr. Cain's character based on his handwriting. For a dime and a self-addressed envelope, she would analyze interested readers' writing on a Tacoma Times newspaper coupon. Mr. Cain was the general chairman of the Golden Jubilee festival which celebrated Washington's fifty years of statehood. The following year he would be elected mayor of Tacoma. Harry P. Cain at Golden Jubilee office on July 21, 1939. Mr. Cain, later to become the city's mayor and U.S. senator, successfully coordinated the event-packed Jubilee celebration, commemorating Washington's fifty years of statehood. Massive parades, pageants and water carnivals kept residents busy for nearly a week. ALBUM 12.

Even the chairman wears a nametag! Harry P. Cain appears to be gesturing with a pipe as he coordinates the massive Golden Jubilee celebration from Jubilee headquarters on July 21, 1939. He has a Washington Golden Jubilee badge pinned to his three-piece suit; his name can faintly be seen on the top part of the badge. Mr. Cain would later be elected mayor of Tacoma in March of 1940. Jubilee Princess. Lucille Courtney was a semi-finalist for the 1939 Jubilee Queen title. She would be named a Jubilee Princess, along with three other young women. The princesses would participate in the four principal features of the celebration...the pageant, the air show, the water carnival and the Mardi Gras festival. She is pictured in this July 1, 1939, photograph with a short, curly blond hairdo and wearing a blouse with detailed piping and puffy sleeves. (T.Times, 7-4-39, p. 16).

Golden Jubilee Water Carnival at Point Defiance, July 16, 1939. Crowd gathered on dock in foreground, yachts and smaller vessels in background. A ferry can be seen in the distance. At the end of the dock is the canopied throne of the Jubilee Princesses. Over 30,000 people turned out for the opening event of the Golden Jubilee. They were rewarded with a three and 1/2 hour show filled with races, log rolling, water skiing and a teaser sample of the upcoming air show by Tex Rankin.

Caught up in the spirit, Tacoma bus drivers pose in their Jubilee hats. One driver, standing row third from left, wears his coin collector box around his neck; others have them attached to their belts. The hats were sold to boost the celebration of Washington's 50th anniversary of statehood. They were very popular, over 25,000 hats were sold; that's approximately 1 of every 5 Tacomans. Names on the reverse side of the photograph, in no particular order, are Max Wilson, Duke Kraft, E. Guiley, Gill, David Webb, Russell Smith and Haakenson.
