Sea trials. The "Voyager," a 237-foot tuna seiner, underwent successful sea trials in March of 1972 after launching ceremonies at Tacoma Boatbuilding on February 12, 1972. She ran into some trouble just prior to her departure to San Diego on March 27, 1972, when she ran aground on a river bar at the mouth of the Puyallup River. The "Voyager" had been on her way to the City Waterway to load fuel for the first leg of her trip when the mishap occurred. She was stuck for more than six hours before floating off on high tide. Fortunately, there was no damage caused by the grounding, and the ship was able to refuel and head south the following morning. (TNT 3-28-72, p.4 -article on grounding)

ca. 1970. "Apollo." 258-foot tuna boat built by Tacoma Boatbuilding and launched on October 24, 1970. This color photograph may have been taken during sea trials prior to the ship being turned over to her owners, Ocean Blazers, Inc. of San Juan, P.R. Captain's quarters. Surprisingly, this is not the luxurious living room of a contemporary home but living quarters found within the "Sea Royal," the 225-foot tuna seiner built by Tacoma Boatbuilding. An ornate white electric fireplace, large wooden bar with upholstered stools, red leather chairs and oversized stuffed Spanish decor sofa resting on rich, red wall-to-wall carpeting present a picture that is a far cry from former sterile ship conditions. The "Sea Royal" was launched on November 11, 1972, and was undergoing sea trials about the time of the above December 28th photograph. Color photograph ordered by Tacoma Boatbuilding. Boat launching. Holding the traditional bouquet of red roses and cradling a bottle of champagne is Denise Andrade, daughter of Captain Manuel Andrade of San Diego. Denise was the official sponsor undertaking christening duties of the new tuna seiner, "Sea Royal," which was launched at Tacoma Boatbuilding's Hylebos location on November 11, 1972. With the young sponsor are members of her family. At 9:00 a.m., Denise would take a two-handed swing and officially launch the 225-foot fishing boat. Photograph ordered by Tacoma Boatbuilding. The "Nonsuch." An authentic replica of the "Nonsuch," 17th century sailing ship bearing both English and American flags, arrived in Tacoma on September 15, 1972, for a four-day public display. The 53-foot ketch was primarily built of solid English oak although her 37-foot keel was English elm. She had 6-foot anchors with wooden stocks and 2000 square feet of canvas sail. Ornate carvings decorated the ship; they were the work of Jack Whitehead of the Isle of Wight. The "Nonsuch" was built in Great Britain in 1968 for Hudson's Bay Co.'s 300th anniversary celebrated in 1970. Since that time, she has traveled to many American and Canadian ports. The $175,000 vessel's eventual home will be the Manitoba Museum of Man & Nature. Photograph ordered by the Washington State Historical Society. The dirigible "Shenandoah," commissioned by the US Navy, paid a two day visit to Camp Lewis in October of 1924. A special 165 foot tall striped mooring mast was specially constructed for the visit. The giant dirigible, patterned after a German Zeppelin captured by the French in 1917, hovered silently in the air over gawking spectators and their automobiles. On September 3, 1925, a mere nine months later, the airship was caught in a thunderstorm and torn to pieces over Noble County, Ohio. Miraculously, 29 of its 43 crew members survived. Parked outside the National Automotive Warehouse at South 24th & Commerce on December 7, 1973, was a red truck with attached trailer. A large sign on the trailer indicates that it was full of Borg-Warner automotive parts. Borg-Warner is a well established firm in business for over 100 years. Damaged cargo. A battered and torn 40-foot red container is being hoisted from the Japanese cargo ship, the "Kinyo Maru," on January 9, 1975. This was just one of the heavily damaged steel containers removed from the ship's Number 2 hold. Lashings had broken apparently during the stormy voyage to Tacoma. Several men in hard hats observe the procedure while on the wet and slushy deck. The vessel was docked at Pier 7 in Tacoma. Color photograph ordered by Howard, LeGros, Buchanan & Paul, Seattle. According to a reader, Western Furnace would hold its annual company picnic at this location from the mid-1960s to 1992. Western Furnaces, Inc., was a long time Tacoma firm, established in 1912. Sponsor at launching. The 184-foot fishing vessel, "Aquarius," was launched on December 5, 1970. She was built by Martinac Shipbuilding who had built the "Conquest" for the couple to the left, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Madruga, two years before. The other couple in the photograph is believed to be the Richard Madrugas, co-owners of the tuna seiner. The Madruga brothers operated a tuna fleet for Van Camp Sea Foods. Launching party. The "Anela," a 100 x 25-foot steel tuna fishing sampan was launched at Martinolich Shipbuilding facilities on the Blair (formerly Port Industrial) Waterway at high tide in the early morning hours of October 18, 1971. Posed before the ship is the official launching party, including Martinolich president, Anthony Martinolich. Miss Rosemary Shinsato, daughter of owner Jack Shinsato, was the ship's sponsor; she was assisted by her mother, Mrs. Masae Shinsato. Both women are holding large bouquets of long stemmed roses. "SES-100A" experimental craft. The 100-ton surface effect ship (SES) was christened on July 24, 1971, at Tacoma Boatbuilding Co.'s facility on the Hylebos. A joint project of Tacoma Boatbuilding and California's Aerojet-General Corporation, the ship rides on a cushion of air at speeds far surpassing the swiftest of destroyers. Propulsion is provided by high capacity waterjets driven by gas turbine engines adapted to marine use. Mrs. Warren G. Magnuson performed the sponsor's duty of christening the craft with the traditional bottle of champagne; her husband, senator from Washington, was the principal speaker. Side-and-rear view of the "SES-100A," a revolutionary 100-ton prototype craft produced in conjunction with Tacoma Boatbuilding Co., Aerojet-General Corporation of California, and the U.S. Navy. The ship was christened by Mrs. Warren G. Magnuson in ceremonies occurring on July 24, 1971, at Tacoma Boatbuilding facilities. According to the Christening Ceremony Program, the high-speed Surface Effect Ship (SES) was to be tested to provide data for design of multi-thousand ton SES of the future. It was built from several modern materials, principally of a welded aluminum alloy, so that it would have longevity at sea. Ship construction and outfitting was done by Tacoma Boatbuilding. Keel laying ceremonies. This is the view overlooking the keel of the new steel sampan being built for Angel Fishing Co., Ltd., by Martinolich Shipbuilding Corporation. The ship, later christened the "Anela," was built on a specially designed shallow-draft square keel to protect the rudder and single screw from potential damage of sharp coral reefs. The keel was placed in the cradle in which the ship will be built. It ran in the middle of the ship, from her bow to stern, and formed the spine of the ship. The keel was laid on June 19, 1971 and launching scheduled for November 25th. Upon completion, the ship would be delivered to her owners for fishing out of Honolulu. However, work on the sampan progressed so rapidly that the launching was actually accomplished ahead of time on October 18, 1971, with members of the Shinsato family present. ca. 1972. 1972 Richards stock footage. The Norwegian cargo ship, "Kristin Bakke," is dockside at the Port of Tacoma in 1972. The ship also offered comfortable and economical accommodations to those wishing to travel on business or pleasure to the Pacific Coast, Far East and Western Australia. The YFB-87, built for the U.S. Navy, was the first vessel launched from Western Boat Building's new shipbuilding plant at 1720 Marine View Dr. N.E. on the Hylebos Waterway. The 165-foot ferry, christened by Mary Petrich, slid down the ways on December 18, 1969. This ferry was not built to operate in Washington waters but instead was towed to Hawaii where she was used for the Pearl Harbor - Ford Island runs. She was completed in May, 1970 and christened "Moko Holo Hele" which means "Ship that goes back and forth". YFB-87 is no longer in service between Pearl Harbor and Ford Island. View of PG-96, the USS Benicia, on launch date of December 20, 1969. The Benicia, the second US Navy ship to bear the name and named after the city of Benicia, California, was launched at Tacoma Boatbuilding's new plant on the Hylebos on December 20, 1969. The 165-foot gunboat had a 24-foot beam and could reach speeds of 40k. She would be commissioned on April 20, 1970 and decommissioned on October 2, 1971. After service in the South Korean navy, the ship was struck from the Naval Register on August 30, 1996, decommissioned and scrapped. Photograph ordered by Tacoma Boatbuilding. Post-launch view of the USS Benicia. The all-aluminum patrol gunboat was successfully launched at Tacoma Boatbuilding's new shipyard on the Hylebos on December 20, 1969. She had been christened by Mrs. W.F. Petrovic, the wife of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard's commander. Tacoma's shipbuilders were very busy during the 1960's with orders from the US Navy as well as from individuals, particularly those seeking big fishing vessels. Both Western Boat Building and Tacoma Boatbuilding would operate from new, larger plants on the Hylebos in 1969. (TNT 12-21-69, A-4)

Boat launching. With a mighty swing, Mrs. W.F. Petrovic christened the new patrol gunboat, the USS Benicia, at Tacoma Boatbuilding's new $3,000,000 shipyard on the Hylebos Waterway on December 20, 1969. Mrs. Petrovic was the wife of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard's commander. The 165-foot vessel, PG-96, was made entirely of aluminum. Launching. Champagne explodes as Mrs. Joseph A. Gann, wife of the ship's co-owner, officially christens the tuna seiner, "Polaris," on March 7, 1970. The 165-foot fishing boat was one of three ships built for Joseph and Edmund Gann of San Diego by J.M. Martinac Shipbuilding. The sister ship of the "John F. Martinac Shipbuilding Corporation. It was the 9th seiner built of that size by Martinac and one of three built for Joseph and Edmund Gann by the company. Mrs. Joseph A. Sea trials. 1969 was a busy year for Martinac Shipbuilding as it was in the process of completing four tuna clippers. The "Anne M," shown above on September 11, 1969, was photographed undergoing her sea trials prior to her delivery to Bumble Bee Seafoods and Capt. Frank Souza. The 165-foot tuna seiner was named after the wife of the owner of Bumble Bee; Anne (Mrs. John S.) McGowan had the honor of christening the boat on June 14, 1969. The white ship makes a striking appearance as waves break over her bow; in constrast to the white fishing boat, the blue of the sky seamlessly melds into the clear blue water.
