The John S. Baker Junior High School (now Middle School) had many students interested in joining the school band. In February of 1970, the large band posed under the tall firs at the south end school located at 8320 So. Members of the Tacoma High School faculty and the senior class, class of 1900, posed on the porch and steps of the school then located at 714 Tacoma Avenue South. The site was the former location of the Washington College, private school for boys. Two students have been identified in the photograph: George (or Georgia) Armstrong and Roy Knapp. Roy Knapp is seated in the second row of steps, second from left, next to an unidentified female. He was the business manager in 1899-1900 for the "Tahoma," the monthly publication of the Tacoma High School students and would pass away in 1906. Two cadets sit on the step railings. They are holding their distinctive hats and appear to be wearing similar clothing, i.e. uniforms. Cadets would participate in drills and would have an armory prepared for their use. The first baseball game of the season for the Tacoma City League. The bleachers at Lincoln High School are filled to capacity with fans watching the 1935 runner up, the Superior Dairy team, play the 1935 champs, the Beacon Oilers. Jason Lee School 9A class. The ninth grade class poses in the school gymnasium under a basketball hoop with a torn net. Jason Lee opened in 1924, the first and biggest of the six intermediate schools built with proceeds from a $2.4 million bond issue passed in 1923. By the end of its first year, the school was already overcrowded with 1600 students in a school built to accomodate 1200. It was added on to in 1968 and remodeled in 1966 and 1972. The school reopened in 2002 after extensive remodeling.

In March of 1937, the Stadium High School orchestra was tuning up and practicing for the upcoming premier of the original opera "Masquerade," written by their instructor Clayton Johnson, shown here conducting. Mr. Johnson graduated from the College of Puget Sound and after further studies, returned to Tacoma to take the post of Director of Music at Stadium High School. He held that position for 30 years, counting among his students Janis Paige, star of stage and screen, and Metropolitan Opera performers Roald Reitan and Hugh Thompson. "Masquerade" was one of two operas Mr. Johnson wrote during his tenure at Stadium. He died in June of 1982 at the age of 83. (T. Times, 04-01-1937, p.1; TNT 06-21-1982, pg. C-12)

In March of 1926, Stadium High School initiated its own branch of the national "Longfellows" Club. Members had to measure in at over six feet in height to join. The new club attracted a group of approximately 50 young men who posed in front of Stadium High School at 111 North "E" Street. (WSHS; A-1488 same photo without lettering)

The school was the first and largest of six new "intermediate" schools built after the 1923 bond issue. Staff members of the Clover Park High School newspaper, the Clover Leaves, are pictured printing the paper on a mimeograph machine. Left to right are: Production Manager Clinton Richardson, Sports Editor LeRoy Beckwith and Advertising assistant Ardys Pratt. Clinton Richardson wears an apron to protect his clothing from spilled ink. Upholding its tradition, the school paper took first class honors in the National Scholastic Press Association competition. The addition of a junior high section, written by their students, gave the Junior high more interest in the paper and raised its number of subscriptions. (1941 Klahowya, pg. 33)

Thirteen Lincoln High School girls, wearing bathing suits and high heels, clustered around an unidentified male student in February of 1941. The girls, who were participating in the "Poise, Posture and Personality" contest at the school, were also hoping to be cast in the school Music Department production of "Of Men and Models". The student written and scored musical comedy, to be directed by student LeRoy "Lee" Hale, told the story of a football hero who inherited a 5th Avenue dress shop. Standing in the back are: (l to r) Betty Snyder, Florence Anderson, Carol Lind, Lois Dahl, Matilda Drennen, Mary Sandford, Doris Davey and Mary Anne Wilkins. The other five girls are: (l to r) Janet Wolters, Martha Farrell, Garnet Thompson, Lawauna Dickes and Harriet Sommervell. Contestants had to be at least 5'4" tall. From the writing on the blackboard, this night school class appears to be hard at work studying their prefixes. In October of 1939 over 1,700 adults took part in over 60 classes offered at Lincoln High School on Monday and Thursday nights. One of the purposes of the night school program was to help adult students catch up on basic educational tools, such as reading, writing and basic arithmetic. The most popular courses were Naturalization and Americanization, shop and interior design. (T. Times 10/12/1939, pg. 13)
