Although the Western Farmers Assn. truck has an advertiserment for WFA heating oil on its passenger's door, it apparently was unloading bulk feed instead of oil on September 16, 1964. Using the International and other trucks, the Farmers Assn. made home deliveries of bulk feed, as well as oil and gasoline, to its members. Glassware section in the new Bon Marche. A week prior to its August 3, 1964, grand opening, the Bon Marche, first store at the new Tacoma Mall Shopping Center, was primed and ready to go. A look into the glassware shop area saw widely spaced display tables filled with elegant stemware and vases located near the china, gift and silver shops. This is the view from the west entrance to the Mall level. The store's bridal registry was here as well. The Bon had relocated from its longtime downtown spot to the new Tacoma Mall; the four-story store would have over 250,000 square feet and be able to showcase merchandise more effectively. Hooker Chemical Co. operations. Color photograph taken in October, 1964, of Hooker Chemical employee in hard hat spraying large piles of salt on company property. This particular scene is very similar to D142933-15. The salt is reflected in the adjoining pool of water. ca. 1964. National Bank of Washington's Tacoma Mall branch under construction. Passersby stop to watch as the new Tacoma Mall branch of the National Bank of Washington nears completion in the summer of 1964. The circular building with its wall-to-ceiling glass windows and marble exterior would provide to be an arresting sight. Landscaping would be added later around the perimeters of the bank. The bank would take out several full page ads inviting the public to a "bankwarming" and ribbon-cutting ceremonies on August 8, 1964. 100 people would be asked to cut the 350 foot ribbon. Although the street sign states "S. 11th St." and "Commerce," the Pacific First Federal Savings & Loan Association's new building was actually on Pacific Ave. close to the Puget Sound National Bank. It would have a grand opening in September, 1964. View of busy intersection with people waiting to cross the street and also admiring the new bronze fountain, shaped like a lily, which was recently installed by artist George Tsutakawa. Ten years later, the fountain would be moved to Pacific First Federal's new Lakewood branch near the Villa Plaza and replaced by a "dandelion" fountain. The Univac 490 was a 30-bit word core memory machine with 16K or 32K words and a 4.8 microsec cycle time. It was manufactured by the Remington Rand Univac Division of Sperry Rand Corporation. Interior of Star Iron & Steel Co. plant on Alexander Ave. in the Port Industrial area. this is a general view of the machine shop area which has over 15,000 square feet of well lighted, heated space. Founded in 1908, Star Iron & Steel was one of the oldest steel fabricating companies in the Pacific Northwest. Cranes, hoists and special machinery were custom designed and manufactured. In July, 1964, Star Iron & Steel were busy constructing 50 and 350 ton gantry cranes. Gantry cranes are similar to overhead cranes with the same strength and durability but are raised above the floor by support legs mounted on the end trucks. There was ample space in the machine shop area also for assembling crane trolleys, hoists, drive trucks and other mechanical equipment. TPL-9626 (SIS booklet, c. 1965)

This sepia photograph was taken of the Builders Manufacturing & Supply Co. ca. 1915, with a view of lumber products including a finished cabinet, horses and carts, and employees. Signs painted on the front of the building indicate that Builders Manufacturing dealt in doors & windows, high grade interior finishings, lumber & cabinet work, and glass & mouldings. According to the 1911 City Directory, Builders Manufacturing & Supply was located at So. O and Hood. It was headed by E.L. Harrington. By 1915, L.B. MacDonald was listed as president of the firm.

Standing next to a wood carving of a baseball player is perhaps the original model, Carl Hubbell, director of the farm system for the San Francisco Giants for many years. Mr. Hubbell was a famous left handed pitcher for the New York Giants, three-time World Series participant and nine-time All Star. He won the National League Most Valuable Player award in 1933 and 1936. His career spanned 16 seasons and included five straight 20 win years. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947. "King Carl," screwball specialist, remained in the Giants organization for 60 years. ca. 1917. Copy of customer's old photograph. One of these uniformed soldiers in 1917 has been identified as Puget Sound National Bank's future Chairman of the Board, Reno Odlin. He is believed to be second from the left in the front row. Standing in front of a D&RG railroad car, each soldier appears to be holding a bedroll and rifle and wears a broadbrimmed hat which shades his face. They may have been part of the Second Washington Infantry, which Odlin had joined in 1916, that was searching for Pancho Villa. Following the United States entry into WW1 in 1917, Odlin would join the 28th Division in France and be commissioned as a second lieutenant at age 21. Five of Tacoma's business and civic leaders clasped hands in a show of camaraderie at the Winthrop Hotel on December 10, 1964. Henry Foss (far left), Joshua Green, the 95-year-old Peoples National Bank Chairman of the Board (second from left) and Reno Odlin (second from right) were among those pictured. 240 leading bankers and businessmen from as far away as San Francisco met to honor Reno Odlin, the newly-elected president of the American Bankers Association. Mr. Odlin, Chairman of the Board of Puget Sound National Bank, was the first banker from the Pacific Northwest elected to serve in this position. Photograph ordered by Cole & Weber Advertising. Scenes from Gov-Mart. Before there was Costco and Sam's Club in this area, there was Gov-Mart South, which claimed to be the Northwest's first and finest membership department store. Throngs attended the grand opening on October 14, 1964, of a new market and other additions to the store. October 14th saw a change in name and policy, as well as showcasing expansion: store name changed to Gov-Mart/Baza'r and it was now open to the public without membership requirements. 20,000 eager shoppers took advantage of Gov-Mart's one-stop discount shopping that promised complete customer satisfaction with low prices. Close-up of bronze fountain designed by George Tsutakawa of Seattle for Pacific First Federal Savings & Loan Association's new building at 1102-08 Pacific Ave. Shaped in the graceful form of a lily, the fountain was installed in time for Pacific First Federal's grand opening in late September, 1964. Careful placement of shrubs and benches made this courtyard a peaceful place in which to reflect. Carver at work. The carver's face is unseen but his sturdy hands are pictured carefully carving the image of a worker, possibly a logger, dressed in overalls and boots and carrying a shovel, onto a large piece of wood. The wood is already scored in a leaf pattern. Two of the carver's tools rest against the carving while he uses a third. The work was being conducted at the residence of lumber magnate Ben Cheney.

Boyle home. This view is believed to be the front of the Raymond A. Boyle waterfront residence located on Spanaway Lake, taken on April 16, 1965. Bedroom in Oakbrook model home. Ivory colored walls and delicate draperies along with the floral patterned chair and flower wall covering give this bedroom a feminine touch. A colorful bouquet of flowers is displayed in a smoked glass vase; beads and a blossom rest on an adjacent set of drawers. Built by Evergreen State Builders for the 1965 Tacoma Home Show, this room, as well as the curving staircase and family room, is covered with a thick light gold carpet. All four bedrooms were spacious and carpeted; the master bedroom had its own bathroom. During the six-day run of the home show, nearly 20,000 visitors toured this model home located on Jade Dr. S.W. in Oakbrook. Color photograph ordered by Evergreen State Builders. Model home interior. Two small steps lead from the spacious living room to a small dining room in this 1965 Tacoma Home Show (now called the House & Garden Show) model home. The dining room faced the rear yard in this wooded lot. Called the "New Englander" and built by Evergreen State Builders in the Oakbrook subdivision, the home's furnishings reflected the Early American atmosphere with formal dining room table and high back chairs, hutch, and comfortable stuffed furniture. The home enjoyed wall-to-wall gold carpeting which was thickly padded. The elegant semi-Colonial contained four bedrooms and two baths. The exterior featured white cedar, red brick, black shutters and four white columns with double-door entry. It attracted nearly 20,000 visitors during the show's six-day run and prompted sales of $250,000 in new homes in the Oakbrook community. Color photograph ordered by Evergreen State Builders. This aerial view of the new colonial style Lakewood Motor Inn at 6125 Motor Avenue S.W. in Lakewood shows the motel as it looked on June 5, 1965, the 41-unit, deluxe inn's opening day. Located at the corner of Motor Avenue S.W. and Whitman, across from the Lakewood theater, the L-shaped, two-story complex was designed by Donald F. Burr & Associates. It featured a large courtyard with an outdoor swimming pool. Although the area around it has greatly changed, the motel is still there - now called the Best Western Lakewood Motor Inn. Bonneville Hotel. The deteriorating floor of a guest facility at the Bonneville Hotel in August, 1965, is one of the reminders that the historic hotel has closed. Built in 1888, named the Rochester Hotel and remodeled after a fire in 1906, the hotel also underwent a name change to the Bonneville the same year. Primarily a residential hotel, the Bonneville had spacious rooms which included bay windows. The hotel would be demolished in 1966. Photograph ordered by Silk Investment Co., San Francisco.

A young member of the Wilkinson family troupe that performed in the Dave Bunker Show leaps high into the air while still clutching her guitar on May 4, 1965. Mother Jody and daughters Vicki, Patti and Dixie (two daughters shown above) played and sang for many years with Dave Bunker who is holding his trademarked two-neck touch guitar. Studio portrait of the Dave Bunker Show. Dave, a Washington native, and his troupe performed in Las Vegas for more than ten years. He and his father, Joe, built and patented the first Bunker Touch Guitar in 1961; it was built with two necks so that the guitarist could play lead and bass. All the guitars were built for his group by Dave and had very distinctive, unusual appearances. The Dave Bunker Show featured the Wilkinson Family headed by mother Jody and daughters Vicki, Patti and Dixie. All the women sang and played instruments although Jody may have been the lead singer. The group picture above has Dave on guitar, Jody Wilkinson at the mike, blond Patti on guitar and either Dixie or Vicki as the other guitarist. The drummer, new at the time of this May, 1965, photograph, is unidentified. The gold lame outfits worn by the Wilkinsons and the men's rose-tinted jackets were perfect for the glitz and glamour of the Golden Nugget Casino in Vegas. Photograph ordered by Dave Bunker.
