Over 56,000 people flocked to the Westen Washington Fair in Puyallup on Tacoma Day in September of 1937. Three little visitors, Tommy Veale and Bobby Glover of Bremerton and Patricia Ruth Gray of Tacoma were given instructions by attendant Clayton Osborne on how to drive a toy fire engine on the canvas-top, merry-go-round auto ride.

As always, on Tacoma Day in 1937, food was a major part of the fun at the Puyallup Fair. The teenage and pre-teen students enjoying ice cream bars at a fair concession stand are (l to r) Lief Washburn, Shirley Hamblin, Beverly Anderson, Marjorie Duskie (the tall girl behind Beverly), Geraldine Anderson and Frances Alexander. The girl at the far right in the print dress was not identified. The turnstile registered over 56,000 fair goers on Tacoma Day, September 22, 1937 at the Western Washington Fair. The first horse show of the season at the Tacoma Armory, November 19, 1937. The show is being sponsored by the Headquarters Troop, 24th Cavalry Division, Washington National Guard, known locally as "Troop B." Governor's Review of troops at Fort Lewis. Parade unit marching in formation followed by mules. A military band is marching on the infield. An expansive line of automobiles is parked along the parade grounds in the distance. Thousands of spectators were present to view the largest military review to date at Fort Lewis. 14,000 regular army and national guard troops paraded past the stand where the governors of Washington, Oregon and Montana, along with military officials, stood in review. Eleven bands marched with the units to which they were attached. Tanks, mules, motor trains including full motorized equipment, and men passed in formal review during the three hour show of military might. (T. Times, 8-21-37, p. 1, 8-23-37, p. 1)

Third Division Review, held at Fort Lewis on May 13, 1937. Soldiers stand beside mules hitched to spoke-wheel field artillery. a memorable transition to a modern motorized army of tanks and aircraft. Governor Clarence Martin's Review of troops on Fort Lewis. Large crowd on hillsides observing parade of military vehicles and personnel in an open field. A dirigible from the 3rd Balloon Co. is flying overhead. Army officials made sure there was plenty of parking for the thousands of spectators who wanted to see the impressive display of American military power. The three hour pageant included thousands of troops plus tanks, mules, horses and motorized equipment. (T. Times, 8-21-37, p. 1, 8-23-37, p. 1)

Tacoma turned out in full force to welcome the marines and sailors from the U.S. Naval fleet during the big, colorful parade that was part of the July 1935 "Fleet Week" celebration. Tens of thousands viewed with patriotic pride Uncle Sam's best: the 1,700 sailors and marines and 2,500 Fort Lewis soldiers, R.O.T.C., and C.M.T.C. troops who marched in the joint naval and military four-mile parade. The Reserve Officers from Fort Lewis are pictured above marching down Broadway in front of buildings in the 900 block. The distinctive Bostwick building can be seen clearly in the right background. Soldiers, Sailors and Marines parade down Pacific Ave. The large Navy massed marching band from the flagships is followed by the Marines in procession on Pacific Avenue. The Riviera Theater, Rust Building and other 900 Pacific Avenue block buildings in background. The parade was being held in honor of Fleet Week. The parade route was north on Pacific Ave, from 15th to 9th, up the hill to Broadway and south to 15th. (T. Times 7/30/1936, pg. 1).

A military parade featuring the US Navy, Army and Marine Corps proceeds down the 900 block of Pacific Ave. Banners and flags strung across the street flap in a stiff breeze. Prominent on the right hand side of the picture are the Riviera Theatre at 906 Pacific Ave., Washington Hardware, at 924, and the Rust Building, at 950. Mayor Gordon Johnston and Pierce County Commissioner Clay Huntington jointly do the honors in opening the 1977 Tacoma Home Show held at the Tacoma Mall. At the far left is Gordon Rockwell, show chairman. Each year thousands of spectators would peruse the various exhibits demonstrating the latest trends in home decor. Miss Norma McDermott of Odessa, WA poses with the Black Minorca cock owned by O. R. Winters of Dundee, OR. at the annual Tacoma Poultry Show which opened December 28, 1937. Mr. Winter's big black, Grand Champion the previous two years, was named the champion cock of the show. The poultry show ran from Tuesday through Saturday. On Saturday evening the traditional poultrymen's banquet, a home-cooked chicken dinner, was held at the Odd Fellows Hall at 6th and Fawcett. (T.Times, 12/31/1937, p. 14).

Policemen's Ball at Century Ballroom, Fife, on December 17, 1937. Large group of police officers and women standing in lines; a dozen Art Deco style chandeliers hang from the ceiling. Public Works Commissioner Abner Bergersen is second from right in first row. Mayor George Smitley (not pictured) led the Grand March into the ballroom; he was accompanied by several city commissioners and high ranking police officials. Enjoying the sunshine on Easter morning in 1937 are churchgoers at the First Congregational Church, 209 So. J St. The many children present, all dressed in their Sunday best, seem to indicate that this may have been the various Sunday School classes at the church. A few of the girls have been identified as front row, left to right: Jean Williams (with lily plant), possibly Joan Finch, Marjory Long, possibly Kathryn Burr, Jane Parker, and Virginia Lee (Wendy) Wagner in polka-dotted dress with hands on wall. Seymour S. Todd (standing, second row at far left) was a teacher at Stewart Junior High School.

The John Dower Lumber Co. float in the 1935 Daffodil Parade. This floral tribute was the first prize winner in Division IV, commercial entries. It displayed a miniature house, all constructed of daffodils, with real glass windows.

The viewing stand for the 1935 Daffodil Parade, a daffodil fountain erected in Broadway Square, at 9th and Broadway. The framework for the fountain was 25 feet square and 25 feet high and was constructed by carpenters on loan from the Fisher Co., Rhodes Department store and the Hotel Winthrop. Into its chicken wire framework were thrust 100,000 daffodil blossoms, giving it a fresh, sunny yellow glow. Over 175,000 blossoms were used to decorate Pacific Avenue and over a million were used on the floats. (filed with Argentum)
