Andrew's Fixture Company, Cosmetic Case, Pay Less Drug Store. A view of the new cosmetics display case with three levels of shelves to feature nail polish, perfume, cologne and lipsticks. The case has room for storage in six large drawers across the bottom and twelve smaller drawers in the center. The glass shelves are backed with mirrors to further enhance the merchandise. A magazine rack is behind the cosmetic case. Customers are browsing in the back of the store.

Progress photographs at St. Regis, St. Regis Paper Company, Kraft Pulp Division. St. Regis Paper Company was well along in a big expansion program at the Tacoma plant, adding a multiwall bag plant as well as a pulp manufacturing plant. Tacoma was one of the locations of St. Regis that supplied pulp from their own mills for their kraft paper production. Adding the exterior to the new construction is nearly complete. In 1948 there were two F. W. Woolworth stores in Tacoma, one at 1106 Pacific Avenue and the other at 1126 Broadway. The store managers were Frederick T. Treichel and James H. McChesney. This aerial photograph shows the Tacoma shoreline looking north from the mouth of the City Waterway (Thea Foss Waterway) as it looked in October of 1948. Ships are taking on cargo at the terminals along Dock Street and the Shaffer Terminals on Bay Side Drive along the waterfront at the foot of Division Avenue. Boxcars fill the tracks in the Northern Pacific "half-moon yard". The Fourth Street Bridge provides access over the railroad tracks from Dock St. to Bay Side Drive. The smokestack in the distance is from the ASARCO facilities. This area was dramatically transformed with the building of I-705 and the Schuster Parkway.

Mrs. Overton G. (Jennie) Ellis, Bonneville Hotel. Early in September of 1948 Mrs. Overton G. Ellis moved into a suite at the Bonneville Hotel. Mrs. Ellis had first stayed at the hotel in September of 1894 as a new bride when the hotel was still known as The Rochester. In her room, Mrs. Ellis is surrounded by antiques and photographs of six generations. The chair by which she stands dates back to 1856. It was brought to Tacoma by Mrs. Ellis' mother at the turn of the century. (T.Times, 10/2/1948, p.11)

On September 12, 1948, Iris Bryan put her sorrel gelding over a picket fence near the Woodbrook Riding Academy. The photograph ran in conjunction with a story on the jointly sponsored horse show May 7-8, 1949. Miss Bryan was one of the leaders in the Woodbrook Hunt Club in jumping. Mr. L.H. Burnett with cake celebrating 50th Anniversary, Burnett Brothers Jewelry. An exterior view of the Burnett Brothers Jewelry store in Tacoma upon the celebration of the store's 30th anniversary. The firm was celebrating its 50th anniversary from the opening its first store in Chehalis in 1898. In celebration of both anniversaries the store held a big anniversary sale to let the public know Mr. Burnett's appreciation for their patronage. A view of the railroad sidings at Cascade Pole and several long, straight poles that have been creosoted on one end lined up near the sidings. Specialized railroad-tie sized log- holding frames are seen in the yard. They could easily move many poles from place to place in the manufacturing processes.

This was the last game prior to the start of the Evergreen Conference season. The highly favored San Jose came from behind to beat the Loggers 20-7. Group at Continental Baking Company, M. Hook. The wholesale bakery was first built as Matthaei Bread Company in 1913. Continental took over the location in 1934. W.E. Taylor served as manager of the bakery. Nineteen employees stand together on the steps of the bakery. A sign advertising Wonder Bread is on the door behind them.

25 girls attending banquet at Crawford's Delta Rho Gamma, Phyllis Brynestad. The Delta Rho Gamma sorority of Pacific Lutheran College held several reunions in the first week of September 1948 and on September 11th, Crawford's Sea Grill was the scene of a reunion banquet. Several of the young women would be going to different colleges in the fall and this was the last reunion before their departure. Miss Beulah Heidahl, new dean of women at PLC, was also introduced. Grandstand with kids, Fife High School, Mr. Vinson. The new Fife Grandstand was two years in the making. Residents gathered for the dedication of the new memorial football field with the game between Fife High and Clover Park. The turfed field with new lights was used in 1947 but the stand, which seats 1,000 persons, was not constructed until the summer of 1948. (TNT, 9/22/1948, p.19)

New grandstand at Fife High School, Fife Hi, Mr. Vioson. The new stands at Fife Memorial field were dedicated September 23, 1948, by a football game between the Fife Trojans and the Clover Park Warriors. A young man announces the play during the Tacoma Open Golf Tournament from the roof of one of the buildings at the Fircrest Golf Club. Bleacher seats were placed at vantage points for spectators to watch their favorites come in off both nines. Patrons report the upside-down "Mark's Used Cars" sign was intentional--and one of many unusual ploys by the business to get customers into the lot.
