ca. 1938. Neff & Co. Flooring Store, interior view of rolls of linoleum flooring. The company was owned and operated by Arthur L. Neff, a local amateur boxing supporter. They sold retail furnishings, including a complete line of carpets, rugs, linoleum, washing machines and homes products. They also sold the Johns-Manville line of asbestos siding & roofing. The company recently bought the stock of floor coverings previously owned by Pacific Floor Covering Co. (T. Times 10/19/1938, pg. 2) (filed with Argentum)
ca. 1938. The Rigney twins, Lucia Rose Rigney O'Donnell and Marcella Catherine Rigney Henly, pose with grandchildren at a family reunion in Steilacoom. The sisters were born to John and Elizabeth Rigney in 1862, two of 9 children and the second set of twins. Rose married Judge William O'Donnell. They had no children. Marcella married Neil Henly. They had seven children. After the twins were widowed, they lived together at the Rigney home in Steilacoom and kept statistics for Western States Hospital until 1950. Marcella died in August of 1950 and Rose died March of 1951 after the pair celebrated their 89th birthday.

ca. 1938. Dogs were apparently welcome at this eating establishment as a large black Cocker Spaniel gets a treat from a man stting on a soda fountain stool. Begging on his hind legs appeared to have paid off for the pooch in a 1938 stock photograph. Although a touch of elegance is present with the rattan counter stools which slope back, hamburgers were still an affordable 10 cents each.

ca. 1938. Jackson Brothers Meat Market in the newly modernized Manning's store. Left to right, Elmer Jackson, Mike (last name not identified), Walter Jackson and Edwin Jackson. The meat market at Manning's had been in operation several years before 1926 when Edwin Jackson and Aug Fauss became partners and proprietors of the New Tacoma Meat Market. Edwin's brother Walter was working for them at the time and a few years later, Elmer Jackson was also cutting meat at 1102 Commerce. In the 1930s, it became Jackson Brothers Meat Market; they specialized in quality meat and sold Swift Co., Carsten's and Rath's meat products over the years. The Jackson Meat Market remained here until the building was razed in 1972.

ca. 1938. Dickman Lumber, 2423 Ruston Way. This aerial view, taken circa 1938, shows vast stacks of lumber ready to be loaded onto ships. Dickman Lumber was located just south of the present Old Town dock. It was purchased in 1922 by Leonard Howarth and Ralph L. Dickman, Sr. Dickman Lumber was closed in September of 1977 and its mill destroyed by fire in January of 1979.
ca. 1938. 1938 Daffodil Festival Queen. 17-year-old Bliss Lundrigan of Puyallup was chosen the 1938 Daffodil Festival Queen. She was accompanied by princesses Bernice Daniel of Tacoma and Agnes Kucemba of Sumner. Miss Lundrigan is shown seated in a chair hidden by a mass of daffodils. A robe of royal purple is fastened at the collar; 1938 was the first year that Royalty wore official robes. A crown of daffodils adorns her dark hair.
