Tacoma Boat launched a Pacific Coast-type purse seiner. The "F. D. Roosevelt" was built under the UNRRA contract for Yugoslavia. It is a modern boat completely refrigerated, powered by a 360 horse power engine, with diesel generators, 85 feet long, 22 foot beam and a 10,000 mile range. Miss Margaret Marinkovich (second from right) was the launching sponsor, Marcus Nalley, second from left. (T. Times, 7/1/46, p. 3).

Thousands gathered on Broadway in Tacoma to see the impressive Jubilee Parade. The parade went on as planned in spite of the heavy rainfall that fell upon Tacoma's parade-goers for a good part of the festivities. Pierce County Republican Club 1944 Lincoln Day dinner at the Masonic Temple. Wendell Willkie, 1940 Republican Presidential nominee and titular head of the party, gave the main address. View of packed Fellowship Hall with some of the 1700 diners; Mr. Willkie is seated to the left of the large Lincoln portrait. Governor Arthur Langlie is seated to the right of the portrait along with Mrs. Willkie. An overflow crowd of 350 ate in the temple's roof garden area, which included band members from Lincoln and Stadium High Schools. 2000 more people were able to listen to Mr. Willkie's speech in the Temple theatre although no meals were included. The 61.9-foot fishing trawler, the "Hustler, " was successfully launched by Western Boat in June of 1945. As the poem written in her honor states, she has just slid down the ways. The Tacoma city skyline can be seen in the background. The ship's owner was R. Tom Muchlinski and she carried a crew of six. After completion, the "Hustler" was bound for Ketchikan, Alaska. Shortly after being placed in service, she was taken over by the U.S. government.

Hundreds of Tacomans mob the entrance to the Temple Theater on October 2, 1944, to attend a free gala vaudeville show in honor of Tacoma's "fighting mayor" Harry P. Cain, then serving in the European theater. Prominent dignitaries in attendance would include Washington governor Arthur B. Langlie, former Tacoma mayor J.J. Kaufman and acting mayor C. Val Fawcett. Doris Marie Holmgren and Wilfred N. Hess were married Januray 26, 1952, at Holy Rosary Church. Doris is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Holmgren of Litchfield, Minnesota. Wilfred, stationed at Fort Lewis, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hess of Albertville, Minnesota. The bride wore a gown of heavy white satin made with a beaded lace yoke. Her lace trimmed net veil was caught to a headband of orange blossoms and her flowers were a heart-shaped arrangement of red roses and carnations. (TNT, 2/4/1952, p.7)

Irene Griffiths Bothum and George Ernest Wolz were married February 14, 1952, at the home of the groom's mother, Ernestine (Mrs. George) Wolz. These three women and girl, who was likely the flower-girl, stand by the table where the wedding cake has been set. The bride is the dauther of Edward Griffiths. Mrs. Kenneth Lodge was matron of honor and wore a navy blue suit. Dorothy (Mrs. Leo) Wolz, sister-in-law of the bridegroom, Miss Shirley Wolz, sister of the bridegroom, and Mrs. Mina Hiscox assisted. A carriage pulled by twin butterflies is the Rhodes Bro. Department Store entry in the 1952 Daffodil Parade and winner of first place in the commercial division. More than one million sunshine yellow blossoms were used to decorate the 70 floats, many of them carrying out the 1952 "King Alfred" theme. The weather dawned warm and sunny, swelling Tacoma parade crowds to over 200,000. (TNT 4/6/1952, pg. 1)

Her two bridesmaids wear floral headdresses and their dresses have lace bodices with peter-pan collars and short sleeves. They hold nosegay bouquets. The groom is wearing a double-breasted white dinner jacket as do his three groomsmen.

Booth featuring Tappan ranges for Alvin Bravender Co. at the 1952 Home Show at the College of Puget Sound fieldhouse. The fourth annual Home Show was held on April 3-6, 1952 and was sponsored by the Tacoma Master Builders Association. It boasted a carnival spirit with the addition of balloons, music and hot dogs for show goers. It included the commercial exhibits, a seven room model home built at the rear of the fieldhouse, working demonstrations by Tacoma Vocational students, spinning and weaving demos by the Tacoma Weavers' Guild and booths by the Orthopedic Guilds and Tacoma Day Nursery.

Exposure of Rhodes china display booth at the 1952 Tacoma Home Show, April 3-6 1952, at the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse. The fourth annual event, sponsored by the Tacoma Master Builders, featured 20,000 square feet of commercial exhibits designed to fulfill every need and desire of fifties homeowners. Approximately 12, 480 people attended the four day extravaganza.

The model home at the 1952 Tacoma Home Show, the "Tacoman," was a one-story rambler with lots of windows. The siding under the windows on the left portion of the home has been set at an angle for a decorative effect while white clapboards complete the right portion of the house and along the right side. The model home is seen outside the College of Puget Sound Fieldhouse where the home show was staged. The model home had a 380-square foot living area, a family room, three bedrooms, a kitchen and bathroom. (TNT, 4/2/1952, p.28)

A float sponsored by Buck & Sons, Tractor & Implement Co., in the 1952 Daffodil Parade crosses down Pacific Ave. in front of the closed Riviera movie theatre. Two young women clad in shorts stand behind rototillers on this Daffodil covered float pulled by a tractor. Three young men perch on the narrow awning of the Riviera marquee to view the parade. Small children sit on the curb at the front of the crowd to watch the spectacle. The crowd estimated at 200,000, the largest in parade history, waited patiently for the parade which began 1/2 hour after scheduled start time.

During the receiving hour, preceding the dance, the huge crowd of thousands who attended the ball was lined in a queue encircling the room with many groups of guests waiting their turn to enter the line and be received by Gov. and Mrs. Arthur B. Four of the attendees at the 1951 Governor's Ball that was held at the Armory in Olympia. Several thousand Washingtonians attended the traditional Govenor's Ball to honor the state's chief executive. This year's ball occurred only two days after the opening of the 32nd legislative session. The Governor's Ball was followed by a legislative dance February 7th given by members of the Legislature. Frances Marie Barnum and Paul Frederick were married December 30, 1950, in Peace Lutheran Church, Puyallup. The bride stands at the altar with her flower girl, Paula Haush. Miss Barnum's gown was white satin with a lace bodice. The train was long and her veil of illusion, three-quarter length, was fastened to a coronet of seed pearls. She carried red rosebuds and ivy tied with white ribbon. The bride was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Barnum of Puyallup. (TNT, 1/14/1951/ p.D-9)

Thomas J. Porro, president of the Tacoma Public Library Board of Trustees, addresses the crowd on the occasion of groundbreaking for the new central building at the Main Library. The March 20, 1951, event began at 4 p.m. and included speeches by Mr. Porro, Mayor John Anderson, and Silas E. Nelsen, library architect. In attendance were members of the city council, library board of trustees, library employees and building contractors. Behind the speaker's podium was an oversized billboard expressing how the library's resources could be used by patrons of all ages and interests. The public service message is a timeless one which still resonates in today's culture. The new portion of the Main Library, built with a concrete frame with Walker-cut stone facing, would be officially dedicated on November 2, 1952. (TNT 3-18-1951, A-6-article on new library)

Dorothy Mae Norton, of Yakima, and Cpl. George Panich, U.S. Army Military Police, pose after their wedding at the main chapel at Fort Lewis on February 11, 1951. Mrs. Panich, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N.L. Norton of Yakima, wore a white satin gown with inset lace panels. The Dutch hat styled lace headdress was attached to a waist length veil and she carried a bouquet of pink rosebuds and carnations. The groom was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marco Panich of Ironwood, Michigan. The couple was attended by PFC and Mrs. Gene R. Michael. The matron of honor wore a yellow organdy gown and matching hat. The reception was held at the quarters of Sgt. and Mrs. Dale Barker. The couple made their first home in Tacoma. Float #30, entitled "Springtime," won the Sweepstakes Award in the 1951 Daffodil Festival parade. The float had two large robins in the front and enormous butterfly wings at the rear with a young lady as part of its "body." Two other young misses carry metal watering cans as they pose next to a flowering arbor. This float was the creation of the St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber Co.

Float #37 in the 1951 Daffodil Parade had as its theme, "Safety First." A small house, created out of daffodils and topped with shrubbery, was escorted by both a woman "fireman" and a smiling "devil." It was parked outside the Oxygen Sales & Service Co., sellers of oxygen and welding products.
