Russell H. "Russ" Michael (far right) poses in front of his service station at 3740 So. M. St. with the baseball team that he sponsored. The team had just won the Twilight League Baseball Championship for 1938. Russ Michael opened his station in 1936. He had previously worked at the Michael Brothers Service Station. In the 1950s he started Michael's Oil Service at 1315 So. 38th. Russ Michael died April 14, 1991 at the age of 79.

Albert Dorn displays watermelons growing in the garden of his son's, Dr. Norman Dorn, American Lake home. The luscious red melons are the offspring of seed expelled from the mouth of noted Tacoma businessman Ted Faulk last year. Mr. Faulk was enjoying a repast of ice cold melon at the Dorn home last summer. The seeds collected in his mouth, and boys being boys, he initiated his own personal precision aim contest; spitting the seeds out the window, aiming for a small can lid on the ground. The following year, when strange seedlings appeared in the garden, Dr. Dorn was preparing to pull them out when his wife remarked how much they resembled watermelon vines. The pair put two and two together, and the melon crop was babied to red lush maturity. (T. Times 9/16/1938, pg. 12)

Western Washington Fair grandstand. During the 1938 Tacoma Day at the fair, 49,690 people walked through the gates. Fifteen thousand people packed the grandstand to the point of sitting on the concrete stairs for shows and races. (T. Times, 9/22/38, p. 1)

Fifteen hundred cheering horse race enthusiasts packed the grandstands at the 39th Western Washington Fair on September 21, 1938. There were six races held daily throughout the run of the Puyallup Fair. The 21st was Tacoma Day. By 1 p.m. over 20,000 fair goers had passed through the turnstiles. The official attendance tally for the day was 49,690.

The Golden Anniversary of the Union Club was celebrated September 22, 1938. It was attended by two of the charter members, John S. Baker and Alexander Baillie, as well as members of the "Old Guard" and current members. The Club came into being in the summer of 1888, when a need was recognized for an organization to further the fledgling Tacoma's growing business interests and for a place to entertain distinguished guests. It was organized by the late George Browne, who met with 30 local business men to form the first club. Soon the club had 100 members, paying dues of $250 each. Proceeds were used to build the Clubhouse. (T. Times 9/23/1938, pg. 18)

The Union Club's 50th anniversary reunion was held on September 22, 1938. Nine members of the "Old Guard" are pictured, left to right: Frank Hale, W. R. Nichols, William H. Miller, John S. Baker, John Dempsey, Alexander Baillie, William Virges, Ralph Metcalf, and Arthur Grafton. The "Old Guard" was organized at a dinner 32 years prior. Model of Lincoln Bowl Stadium and Lincoln Park improvement project. The model was made by Fred Zinn, WPA commercial artist and draftsman, and shows the site of the proposed new Lincoln Bowl. The arena would be located in the gulch between Lincoln High School and Lincoln Park. The school would lose a small strip of land at the rear of the school and the park would lose a small wooded area at the east side of the park. The Bowl would seat 10,000 on concrete steps and cost about $250,000. Proponents of the Bowl were trying to get it on the November 8th ballot, proposing that the district levy be increased by 1 mill. to raise the $50,000 needed to match $200,000 in federal grant funds.
