Abbie (Mrs. Ray) Keplinger, center at the piano, known professionally as "Keppy" and her band onstage at the Odd Fellows Hall. Five members of the union band, including three women, pose on stage with musical instruments. The band consisted of piano, drums, violin, accordion and a reed (clarinet & saxophone) player. In 1938, Odd Fellows Halls were located at 8330 S Park Ave and 5437 1/2 South Tacoma Way.

On Sunday July 3, 1938, Pat Birch of Tacoma crashed his American Eagle biplane after hitting a string of telephone wires at the east side of Mueller-Harkin Airport near the site of Clover Park Technical College. Birch crawled out of the cockpit and walked away from the crash with only a cut lip. (T.Times 7-4-1938 p.1)

Fireworks display during Fourth of July 1938 celebration at the Stadium Bowl. An array of pyrotechnics both in the air and on the ground brought sparkle and drama to the celebration. In the air were aerial bombs and rockets of bright colors. Ground scenes drawn in fire included the Junior Chamber of Commerce emblem, the "Spirit of 76," the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a battle scene and the grand finale, a bugler blowing taps. Fourth of July celebration, 1938, at Stadium Bowl with crowds in bleachers, Stadium High School and apartment building in background. More than 15,000 people attended the Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsored event. The event featured military exhibitions, band concerts, drill teams, mounted horse teams, an illuminated fire boat drill and an aerial and ground pyrotechnic program by Hitt experts. (T. Fourth of July, 1938 celebration at the Stadium Bowl. Man on horseback jumps through a burning square frame. Part of the evening's entertainment for a "safe and sane" Fourth was the Headquarters Troop, 24th Calvary Division, Washington National Guard performing feats of horsemanship. While ashore during Fleet Week, July 5th-11th, 1938, two unidentified Marines seem to have lost their hats, if not their heads as well, over two young Misses, also unidentified. During Fleet Week, the military landed with force in Tacoma, bringing four battleships and their 5200 officers and men into the city. The week long celebration included parties, a parade, tours of the ships and nightly searchlight drills. TPL-9149

During Fleet Week, the citizenry was invited to come out and see out their defense dollars were being spent. In 1938, the USS California, West Virginia, Tennessee and Maryland dropped anchor in Commencement Bay to visit Tacoma and have Tacoma visit them.

Gunnar Anderson, pianist, with his German shepherd, Duke. The two will ride in Anderson's Austin convertible from Tacoma to Cincinnati where he will study at the Cincinnati Conservation of Music under Dr. Karol Liszniewski. Mr. Anderson is considered one of the superior young pianists on the Pacific Coast. He has worked in Hollywood, on radio and as an organist. His goal is a career as a concert pianist. (T.
