On August 9, 1939, Emory Reagan Sr., a flagpole painter, used a "bos'n's chair" to ascend the 150 foot flagpole at the University Union Club at 539 Broadway. The pole took 5 1/2 hours to paint, during which time Reagan remained aloft. His young sons Duane, 8, and Emory, Jr., 11, kept him supplied with paint and brushes, sent up by a rope and pulley. Mr. Reagan was 35 at the time of this picture and lived with his wife and family at 5020 6th Ave. (T.Times 8/10/1939 p.1) cropped enlargement of D8738 image 2

Frustrations soared as drivers queued up in two lines at the State Vehicle Safety Inspection Station at 3315 So. 38th St. to have their automobiles inspected in October of 1939. The State patrol had started enforcing two year old legislation that required all motorists to have their vehicles inspected for safety. Violators could be fined or arrested. The state had two inspection stations open in Tacoma, the one pictured and one at 914 Puyallup Ave. The building seen on the ridge at the far left is 3333 So. 38th St., originally the Contagious Hospital, which in 1939 housed the WPA (Works Progress Administration.) and later was occupied by Coca-Cola Bottling, Inc. The Morton Logger Jubilee jug band and friends. Cities all over the state were pulling out all the stops to celebrate Washington's 50 year anniversary of statehood and Morton was no exception. The Morton Loggers' Jubilee, scheduled to open September 2nd and end on Labor Day, however had a decided hillbilly flair. Some 3,000 Southern mountain people, mostly from Kentucky & West Virginia, would dramatize real old style hill life of the upper South. They would be trekking to Morton, leading hound dogs, carrying rifles and wearing coon skin caps. One of the highlights of the celebration would be a public hillbilly wedding, with food, dancin' and gun totin'. Morton, a logging and sawmill town, is on the Tilton River thirty-three miles east of Chehalis in central Lewis County. (T. Times 8/24/1939, pg. 8)

As a joke on July 20, 1939, Titus Ford Service Department superintendent Dick Frayne, behind the wheel of Leon Titus's 1906 Ford Model N, drove the antique into the State Vehicle Safety Inspection Station. Joe Thomas, director of the Station and veteran race driver, scratched his head wondering where would he put the red sticker if the car passed; the vehicle had no windshield. Enjoying the joke were white uniformed inspectors, as well as Lloyd Raab, behind vehicle in western hat, Leon Titus, second from right, and Larry Pritchett, right. All of the men not on duty were photographed in their Washington State Golden Jubilee hats. (T. Times 7/26/1939, pg. 10)

Civic leader Harry P. Cain with famous handwriting analyst Andrienne at the office of the Golden Jubilee Festival committee in April, 1939. Andrienne had some very kind words to say about Mr. Cain's character based on his handwriting. For a dime and a self-addressed envelope, she would analyze interested readers' writing on a Tacoma Times newspaper coupon. Mr. Cain was the general chairman of the Golden Jubilee festival which celebrated Washington's fifty years of statehood. The following year he would be elected mayor of Tacoma.
