A compliment of her writing skills from her new 1st grade teacher prompts an embarrassed giggle from Angel Cantu during the first day of school at Mann elementary. Her teacher, Ruby Folden, commented on her mastery of the letter "A", in writing class and noted that she be good at A's as it is the first letter of her name.

--Freeway Model Displayed--
A 40-foot model of the Tacoma Freeway as it will appear when completed in several years is being displayed this month on the second floor of the county-City Building. Picture shows freeway running east to and over the Puyallup River. G. M. Schuster, city public works director, front right, points to state approach to city's projected Yakima Avenue Bridge. Under his arm are Delin Avenue and Tacoma Avenue undercrossings. Behind Schuster are Harold A. Hagestad, left, coordinating engineer between Tacoma and state, and Myron Calkins, city engineer. They are pointing to the complex of crossings and approaches that will be the Pacific Avenue Interchange, designed to relieve Freeway of Cross-town traffic congestion.

--Who Needs a Sign?--
No arrow is necessary at the South 108th Street and Pacific Avenue intersection to point out Mount Rainier. Not in good weather anyway. The early spring, with crystal-like skies, is now in its seventh consecutive rainless day. It affords new opportunities to capture Tacoma's favorite mountain on film, as seen in this framed photograph by News Tribune Staff Photographer Wayne Zimmerman.

--A Light Fantastic Trip--
Motorists who travel on Interstate 5 during night and early morning hours have noticed something new in addition to a concrete barrier separating the north and southbound lanes between Tacoma and Ft. Lewis. A major portion of the project includes the installation of a powerful lighting system. Persons who have driven past the new lights say they are so bright that headlights are hardly needed

--Highway 167 'Missing Link'--
The State Highways Department has announced that construction of this section of SR 167 between Sumner and Pacific City has been delayed for lack of funding. However, a $900,000 contract has been awarded Scarsella Bros., Seattle, to construct the 1.4-mile section between Main Street at Sumner and 32nd Street East (in foreground). A temporary connection will carry traffic from the freeway to the nearby West Valley Highway at 32nd, Ralph Kerslake, the department's District 3 engineer, said Wednesday.

--High-rise Curb Splits Interstate 5--
Work on a concrete divider strip separating the northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 5 has progressed from North Ft. Lewis to 56th Street in Tacoma. The project will be complete when the divider is in place all the way to the Puyallup River bridge. Most of the divider is made of pre-cast concrete, although some sections are poured on the spot. The project also includes illumination in some spots. Division of the freeway adds up to a $2,320,000 contract for Woodworth & Co., Inc., of Tacoma.
