Y.M.B.C. (Young Men's Business Club) Water Carnival at Point Defiance. On April 24, 1938, the first water carnival was held as a farewell ceremony for the Tacoma built fishing vessel "Western Explorer." The event was planned by the Y.M.B.C. to promote Tacoma's shipbuilding industry, but it was so immensely popular that it became an annual event. On Sunday April 24, 1938 a crowd estimated at 25,000 filled the deck, boat ramp and parking lot at Point Defiance to watch the Water Carnival sponsored by Tacoma's Young Men's Business Club. A handful of young spectators even climbed out onto the roof of the old Point Defiance Pavilion (far right) for a better view. The carnival which featured tug boat and row boat races and a salmon derby was held in part to celebrate the departure of the Tacoma-built "Western Explorer". It was hoped that coverage of the event by photographers, radio broadcasters, and newsreel companies would serve to publicize Tacoma. (T.Times, 4/25/1938, p.1).

This was just a fraction of the crowds estimated at 25,000 that attended the Y.M.B.C. (Young Men's Business Club) Water Carnival at Point Defiance on April 24, 1938. A full exterior view of the Russel and Babcock-designed concrete waterfront pavilion shows it packed with crowds of people on all three levels. Spectators were treated to a colorful pageant of marine craft ranging from tugs and fishing boats to the Tacoma Yacht Club fleet. Tug and rowboat races entertained all. The 85-foot fishing vessel, the "Western Explorer" bid a fond farewell as she left Tacoma for her long voyage down the coast and on to Gloucester, Mass., via the Panama Canal. Mary (Mrs. Norton) Clapp, holding a bouquet of roses, awarded the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce "Best Dog" prize to Boston terrier, Champion Playfair Rockefeller, winner of the first annual Tacoma Kennel Club show. The terrier had already been named "Best in Show" by judge Irving C. Ackerman of San Francisco. The champion dog was owned by Jack Playfair of Portland. The Kennel Club show on April 24, 1938 closed a two day exhibit at the Fellowship Hall. (T.Times 4/25/1938, p.11).

Y.M.B.C. (Young Men's Business Club) Water Carnival at Point Defiance. The water is teeming with commercial tugs, row boats and yachts. Races were held for each catagory of vessel. Row boats maneuver near the Andrew Foss, Henrietta Foss, Theodora Foss, Peter Foss and Foss Tug No. 10 and 15. " Mathilda Foss" placed first in the Tugboat Annie Race, for boats 50 HP or better. (T. Several trainers with their dogs at the first annual Tacoma Kennel Club show held at Fellowship Hall on April 23 and 24, 1938. Three hundred and five dogs competed for awards. The "Best in Show" winner was Boston terrier Champion Playfair Rockefeller, owned by Jack Playfair of Portland. Over 1800 persons attended the two day exhibit. (T.Times, 4/25/1938, p. 11).

Bob Wilhelmi, a student at Stadium High School, built the helmet. He is holding one of the starfish that he brought up from the bottom of Puget Sound while demonstrating his creation. On April 26, 1938, Humane Society officer H. A. Dennison presented a medal to "Frisky" Bedford, 6-month-old German Shepherd dog, who saved 2-year-old Leon Bedford from drowning in a small pond near his home at 5112 So. 10th St. Leon, seated in front of the Humane Society's "Be Kind to Animals" panel truck, accepted the medal for his friend. The medal originally read "To Frisky Bedford, for saving his master's life." When Leon pointed out to the Society that his dog was a lady, the red faced Humane Society had it re-engraved. Young men from the College of Puget Sound razz a fellow classmate during the first annual C.P.S. picnic held on April 28, 1938. Classes were dismissed early and students poured out on to the grounds to enjoy the annual freshman vs. sophomore tug-of-war, as well as two hours of games. Staff of the Lincoln High School weekly publication "The News." A group of young men and faculty advisor Homer A. Post, standing 2nd from left, are gathered around a desk. A standard Remington typewriter and wire baskets facilitate the budding editors' work. The group has just received word that for the 5th time in 6 years, the paper had been given the Pacemaker All American award by the National Scholastic Press Association. Out of 967 entered high school publications, 218 were named All American and only 10 were named Pacemakers. Ralph Spencer is the editor of the paper.
