The first meeting of the Tacoma Smelter's 25 Year Club at the Towers. During the meeting, Chairman Earl Marble, Manager of the plant, who was instrumental in forming the club turned over its chairmanship to Eugene A. White, retired manager of the Smelter. All Club members had 25 plus years of service with the plant.

Crust breaking machine at Permanente, Bill Gorman. A specialized machine has been manufactured to perform the work that had previously been done manually. A crust would form at the openings to the reduction pots where alumina was melted into raw pig aluminum. The plant had two potlines containing 240 reduction pots producing 41 million pounds of alumium per year. (Permanente Metals Corp. 1947-1948 Annual Report)

Smoke billows out of three smokestacks at one of Bethlehem Pacific Coast Steel's Seattle plants on July 27, 1954; two other smokestacks are quiet. Bethlehem Steel produced much of the steel used in well-known landmarks: the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and the Alaskan Way Viaduct. Aluminum panels nearly cover the entire roof of a new steel hangar at McChord Field on November 18, 1954. Two workers are in the process of marking and drilling nails into the panels. Aluminum and other steel products were seen as an alternative to wood design. Hangars were used to house and repair jet aircraft; McChord was finding it necessary to construct more of them because of the growing number of military aircraft stationed there. A Bethlehem Pacific Coast Steel Corporation crane is in the process of lifting another piece of steel roof truss as work continues on the construction of new hangars on McChord Field in September, 1954. Hangars were used to house and repair aircraft. It appears that instead of being constructed of wood, they were built using steel components. An employee of Ace Furnace & Steel Co. leans one arm against a massive steel jet propulsion fuel storage tank on company property on August 5, 1958. He appears diminutive when contrasted with the 10.6 foot diameter tank. The gas tank measures 77.5 feet in length. Ace Furnace produced steel storage tanks for oil, gasoline and water, stacks, marquees, canopies, steel heating and ventilation systems, boilers, furnaces, and marine sheet metal. The company's major output now are tanks of all sizes, approximately 400-800 tanks per month. The huge tanks pictured above were just built for McChord Air Force Base. It is estimated that these were the largest shop fabricated steel tanks ever built in Tacoma. Star Iron & Steel operations. A Star Iron & Steel employee in overalls and gloves is shown operating an unidentified machine at the company plant in March of 1971. Star Iron & Steel was a longtime Tacoma firm with origins in the 1920s. Cranes, hoists and special machinery made up 70% of Star Iron & Steel's annual volume. Workers are preparing to move a floating bulkhead in early February of 1971 from its construction site at 326 Alexander Ave. to the Port of Tacoma waterfront. It appears that rubber segments are being laid to help with traction. The bulkhead was manufactured by Star Iron & Steel Co. for the U.S. Corps of Engineers. A worker makes one final check before the heavy-duty Northwest Hauling Co. truck departs from Star Iron & Steel's tideflats location on February 3, 1971, with a floating bulkhead in tow. After a stop at the Port of Tacoma, the bulkhead would be towed by tug to its final destination at the Little Goose Lock & Dam on the Snake River. Although Star Iron & Steel was perhaps best known for its manufacture of cranes and hoists, it also accepted other contracts; this $165,000 contract was from the U.S. Corps of Engineers. ca. 1971. 1971 Richards color stock footage. A familiar landmark in Tacoma was the imposing smokestack at the ASARCO smelter. It rose over 500 feet at the smelter located near Point Defiance. The smokestack, dubbed the tallest in the world at the time of its 1917 construction, would be demolished on January 17, 1993.

ca. 1900. This is a copy of an early photograph of the Atlas Foundry & Machine Co., originally taken circa 1900. The copy was made in 1978. Atlas Foundry (since renamed Atlas Castings & Technology) was established in 1899 as a manufacturer of iron castings. Steel and brass were later added to its catalog of moldable metals. Its sprawling complex is still located between Center St. and South Tacoma Way.

Groundbreaking for Atlas Foundry's $5,000,000 expansion and modernization project occurred on February 23, 1978. Standing with his foot on a shovel is company president Leo H. Long, Sr. Among those attending the ceremony were Milo S. Gates and Chuck Fausel (flanking Mr. Long). Founded in 1899, the company is now known as Atlas Castings & Technology. The American Smelting and Refining Co. had celebrated its 50th anniversary as a business in 1949. It was one of the largest employers in Tacoma with well over a thousand employees. As its name indicates, it was primarily involved in the smelting of ore and refining of copper. View of storage tanks at smelter, with truck parked alongside fence. A new type of tire chains were made of heavy castings by Fick Foundry Company. Fick Foundry Company manufactured machine castings for many machinery manufacturers in the Northwest. Castings were made of grey iron, steel, bronze and aluminum. Fick Foundry was owned by Joseph M. and Samuel Fick.

Steel and aluminum fabricating at George R. Marvin Company. The George R. Marvin Company advertised as manufacturing bridge cranes, gantry cranes, floating cranes, hammerhead cranes, special hoists and machinery of fabricated structural steel. The large, open building has railroad tracks running through the length of it. Men and equipment are working along both sides.

Exposure of large machinery dwarfing the laborers at Ace Furnace & Steel Co. This machine is either a shear press or a brace press. The company was built in 1930 and was owned by Alvin T. Davies. Ace produced steel and sheet metal products- furnaces, tanks, stacks and did electrical welding.

Dust collecting equipment at Tacoma Smelter. While copper was the principal product from the Tacoma plant of American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO), there were also by-products including gold, silver, arsenic and nickel sulphate. The acid plant which went onto production in April 1950 produced 100 tons of sulphuric acid a day that was used by the Stauffer Chemical Company in the manufacture of super-phosphate fertilizer. Bethlehem Pacific Coast Steel, steel in railroad boxcars being loaded onto Foss tugs for shipment to Alaska. This is the first shipment in a service announced jointly by Alaska Governor B. Frank Heintzleman and Henry Foss, president of Foss tugs. Foss will load railroad cars aboard the Foss 250, a car barge with transportation service to Alaska, at the Milwaukee Railroad's dock on the Milwaukee waterway. This marks the first time that railroad cars will come out of Alaska after discharging their cargo. The car barge will be towed by the tug Justine Foss. In the future, the car barges will leave every 8-10 days. (TNT 7/5/1953, pg. B-3)

Bethlehem Pacific Coast Steel, steel in railroad boxcars being loaded onto Foss tugs. The current service extends to Ward Cove, 8 miles north of Ketchikan, and site of the $47,000,000 construction project by Ketchikan Pulp & Paper Co. The eight 53 ft. cars, containing steel primarily, will be emptied at Ward Cove and returned to Tacoma. The Foss 250 can carry twenty 40 foot cars on her four sets of tracks and bulk tanks have been built in the barge hull to carry 1,000 tons of caustic soda north for paper plant production. The one way trip to Ward Cove takes 3 1/2 - 4 days. (TNT 7/5/1953, pg. B-3)

Aerial view of American Smelting & Refining Co.'s (ASARCO) smokestack, smelter plant and surrounding area. ASARCO occupied a large area near Point Defiance and contributed greatly to Tacoma's economy in the fifties. As we know now, the by products of the smelting process were highly toxic, and qualified this area as a Superfund clean up area. TPL-9290

Bethlehem Pacific Coast Steel Corp. A variety of bars and structural shapes are rolled on the 12 inch and 8 inch finishing mills. The hot steel is looped by hand from one set of rolls to the next, until it is rolled to finished size and shape. Three finishing mills at the Seattle plant turn out bars and structural shapes in hundreds of different sizes and shapes. Hot steel billets are fed directly into these mills were grooved rolls transform them into angles, channels, I-beams, rounds, squares, flats, strip, reinforcing bars and special sections.
