ca. 1963. Hordes of workers stream in to work in a 1963 photograph. Many of the men are wearing hard hats while others are bareheaded or wearing caps. Several wave their hats in salutes to the cameraman. Richards Studio notes indicate this was the "Old Shipyard," it is possible that this was the old Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corp. yard that was sold to the Port of Tacoma in 1959.

Smoke pours out of the top floors of Manning's Market on September 21, 1963. Several firemen are on the overhang trying to contain the massive fire and one man is midway on the 100 foot engine ladder. The $400,000 fire gutted the interior of Manning's, a longtime institution in Tacoma that contained a coffee shop, cafe, meat market, bakery and beauty salon. In addition, Mierow's Jewelry and Raff's Shoe Store on Broadway were total losses. Thrifty Drugs sustained smoke and water damage. Estimated damages for the entire fire were set at $700,000: $250,000 for the Warburton and Slayden buildings and $450,000 for contents. Altogether, 13 engine companies, four truck companies, two rescue units (one from the Midland Fire Dept.), and three chiefs were dispatched to the fire. Fifteen injuries were reported but none serious. Company owners planned to rebuild after the fire. Richards stock file. Six years after construction of the new Tacoma Savings & Loan Association building at So. 9th & A Sts., work was begun in January, 1963, on expanding much needed parking for the facility. Shovels and cranes have already peeled away part of the building exposing brickwork. One passerby has paused to watch the machinery in action. Tacoma Savings & Loan had acquired the building at 816 A St. formerly occupied by Fuel Oil Service with the intention of demolishing the building to provide more parking space. The $50,000 project was headed by the architectural firm of Lea, Pearson and Richards who had designed the present Tacoma Savings & Loan building. (TNT 1-16-63, A-9)

ca. 1880. Nathaniel Orr's Wagon Shop. Nathaniel Orr was a pioneer wagon maker who had journeyed from Virginia in 1850 to eventually make his home and business in Steilacoom. The photograph of the Wagon Shop at 1811 Rainier St. is undated but perhaps taken in the 1880's. The man standing in the doorway is possibly Nathaniel Orr. The building appears to be a bit lopsided as blocks seem to be placed underneath to make it level. Information received from a reader indicates that Orr had built the house with chimney visible on the right of this photograph as a wagon shop in 1853-4 and built/repaired wagons on its bottom floor (accessible from what is now Rainier St.) When Orr wed in 1868, his wife convinced him to build his wagons somewhere other than in her home and thus this large Wagon Shop was constructed. Besides building wagons, he turned his hand to making necessities such as beds, tables, chairs, spinning wheels and even coffins. He also started a commercial orchard in town. Nathaniel Orr died in 1896 at the age of 69; his home and orchard would later be sold to the Steilacoom Historical Museum Assn. and be placed on the State and National Registry. The Wagon Shop operates as a living museum and has kept its original appearance. Photograph ordered by the Town of Steilacoom. (Town on the Sound, p. 32-36)
