This aerial photograph of the Pioneer Sand and Gravel Company gravel pit was taken in November of 1949. The large gravel pit was located in Steilacoom adjacent what is now University Place; their offices were in Seattle, at 901 Fairview Avenue North. The company specialized in sand, gravel, building materials and "Tru-Mix" concrete. Some years later the pit and the land surrounding it became part of Chambers Creek Properties. In June of 2007 the $21 million Chambers Bay Golf Course opened on this site. TPL-10540

Irving's Clothes Shop was operated by Gussman's Clothes Shops, Incorporated. Irving's advertised that they were "One of Tacoma's Smartest Men's Shops" and "Credit with Courtesy", this store was located at 919 Market Street in Tacoma's business district. St. Regis had been expanding their facilities for many years, the company had added new buildings and had recently begun the mass production of paper in Tacoma. St. Regis began producing paper in January 1949; the paper mill was converting the liquid pulp into heavy multiwall Kraft paper, using the most modern equipment available. Hotel Winthrop was inviting all of Tacoma to join them in the grand opening celebration for the new Trader Vic's Sabre Room. Trader Vic is an internationally known restaurateur, and he has now brought his world famous menu items to Tacoma. The interior of the Sabre Room is modeled after an authentic old English tap room, with figured red carpet, copper bowl lamps, the walls give the impression of aged plaster in a driftwood color. Trader Vic and his wife will host the grand opening celebration.

Mrs. Mamie Jacobs was installed as president of the Tacoma Zonta Club at their June 1949 meeting held at the home of Mrs. Robert Putnam in Steilacoom. In October 1949 Zonta International celebrated its 30th anniversary and the Tacoma chapter observed their 21st anniversary. Mamie Jacobs was also the employment advisor at Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company (T.N.T., 7/10/49, p. D-7 & T.N.T., 10/30/49, p. D-2).

National Bank of Washington was located at the heart of downtown Tacoma, at 1123 Pacific Avenue; this building is now used to house the Tacoma Art Museum. Horluck's was having their grand opening and would offer free ice cream and coffee to their customers. Horluck's was located in the Pacific First Federal Building at South 11th Street and Pacific Avenue. Horluck's was owned by Aldrich Fox and Lloyd Knutsen, well known dairy and fountain men; Jack Fox would be the restaurant's manager. Columbia Breweries, manufacturers of Alt Heidelberg and Columbia Ale, expanded and modernized their brewing facilities and offices once again starting in 1949. This view shows the Tacoma plant and railroad siding that allowed freight trains easy access for shipping Columbia Brewery products. Packaged beer was conveyed from the bottle shop to the shipping depot through an elevated bridge which crossed the railroad yards. (TNT, 1/8/1952, p.B-7)

It offers higher Degrees to a Master Mason (the third and highest of the traditional degrees, and as far as he can go in his Blue Lodge). The Scottish Rite is open to Jews and others. Dravis had licensed mechanical engineers and specialized in engineering, surveying, marine and general machinery manufacturing and repairs. Fife's Poodle Dog restaurant was opened in 1933, added on and renovated in 1939, demolished and rebuilt in 1949 at the same location. The famous restaurant would be rebuilt once more in 1967.
