ca. 1880. John W. Sprague, elected mayor of Tacoma December 10, 1883. First mayor of the consolidated city. General Sprague received the Medal of Honor for service during the Civil War. He was the first president of the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce and was instrumental in starting many of the first businesses in early Tacoma.
