The Spinster Club held a "Bowery" dance at the Century Ballroom in Fife on February 25, 1938. The costume cabaret dance offered favors as prizes for the best costumes. Three unidentified young women in costumes smile at a man dressed in a sailor's uniform who is lighting a candle placed in the neck of a beer bottle. The bottles with candles in them were then placed on tables as part of the New York decor. (TNT 2/24/1938, p.13-article)

After repainting in green and blue, the Junior League Thrift Store is ready to reopen in early 1939. Members established the thrift store in 1930 to support their Well Baby Clinic. At counter: Mrs. John Gregg, Cornelia Marie Cardin, Mrs. John Bates Roberts. The woman identified by the Tacoma Times as Cornelia Marie Cardin was known to her family as "Connie Rie;" and, according to her daughter, she married Paul Sheppard Savidge, Jr. of Tacoma on December 7, 1940. Pictured are six of the seven Tacoma senior Girl Scouts who last year took a "gypsy trip" from Camp Wildwood in Portland, Oregon, to Camp Merriweather in Tillamook. Left to right: Mary McDonald, Marian Hartwich, Peggy Shaw, Jane Loren, Jane Lund, Julia Schwalen. Not picture is Betty Lou Card. The previous summer's trip took them from the Portland Girl Scout camp to Eugene Oregon and on to the coed Tillamook Camp, where they were the guests of the Boy Scouts. A similar trip is planned for August this year from local Camp St. Albans. The trip, as well as other St Albans innovations, will be financed by the "Cookie Crunch," Jan. 23-Feb. 6th, when the girls take advance orders for Girl Scout cookies. New to St. Albans this year will be a Pioneer Unit for senior girls, sailing trips for the Mariner division and the first time admission of Brownies to camp. Fresh air, comradery, canoes, camp songs and s'mores- it's summer and time for Girl Scout Camp! Tacoma Girl Scouts learn boating in July of 1938 at Camp St. Albans on the shore of Lake Devereaux near Allyn. Seven Girl Scouts pose in a row boat with paddles held in an upright position. One of the most anticipated social events for the younger set in 1938 was the "Club of Hearts" yearly formal ball held in the Winthrop Hotel's Crystal Ballroom on December 26, 1938. Helen Feek, Lorraine Ronquist, Sheryl Nyman, and Marcelle Patrick smilingly glance back over their shoulders to have their picture taken. Three scouts (l to r) Jim Myers, Troop 59, David Rees, Troop 2 and Frank Taylor, Troop 99, illustrated the correct way to give the Scout Sign during National Boy Scout Week in 1939. The three middle fingers of the right hand are held upward, representing the three parts of the Scout oath, and the thumb and the little finger touch, representing the bond that unites Scouts throughout the world. Over 2,200 Tacoma area Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts and Cub Scouts from the 110 organized scout units in Tacoma joined together for a full weekend of scout activities in February of 1939. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson declared the first National Boy Scout Week, in recognition of their service during the first World War. (T. Times, 2/14/1939, p. 1)

Knot tying instruction was one of the planned activities for the weekend celebration of Scout Week. Scouting was founded in 1907 in Britain by Robert Baden-Powell. In February of 1939 in honor of National Boy Scout Week, (l-r) David Rees, Troop 21, Frank Taylor, Troop 99, and Jim Myers, Troop 59, were busy learning map making. Over 2,200 Tacoma scouts representing Boys Scouts, Sea Scouts and Cub Scouts gathered over the weekend to share knowledge and celebrate the Scout event. Sam Perkins, left, and G. Herbert Raleigh, members of Tacoma's newest and most exclusive club- the "Tacoma Club," check over the furniture in the club's "lounging room" prior to the Grand Opening the evening of May 10, 1937. The Tacoma Club, located on the top floor of the Washington Building, was organized and incorporated in November, 1936. The original roster of members included leaders in lumber, retailing and manufacturing, banking, real estate, medical, and legal fields. S.A. "Sam" Perkins, newspaper publisher, was one of the first presidents of the club. George Herbert Raleigh was the manager of the Bank of California in 1937.
