Tradition still ruled the fashion of Red Cross dress in March of 1949 when these surgical dressings workers were photographed for an article in the Tacoma News Tribune. They are all wearing white uniforms, with a veil centered in a little embroidered cross of red. March was American Red Cross month and the Tacoma-Pierce County chapter was getting ready to begin its 1949 fund raising campaign. Caught by the camera organizing surgical supplies for military hospitals were: (l to r) Leona McCune, Lucille Branchflower, Eleanora Price, Jessie K. Bacon and Eleanore Bertheau. (T. American Cancer Society would be providing free cancer detection screenings at their clinic in Tacoma during the month of April. April had been proclaimed Cancer Awareness month by Mayor C. Val Fawcett; everyone was encouraged to participate. The Cancer Society would be raising funds for their organization during April, a quota of $20,000 had been set. Fred F. Red Cross Motor Service department transported volunteer nurses and Gray Ladies to various hospitals and medical centers throughout Pierce County. This program also transported patients to their medical appointments, sightseeing trips and errands. American Red Cross Disaster Relief committee would be providing services to residents in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Red Cross would be collaborating with local and regional resources to provide people with immediate relief, and to address the community needs. Pierce County's Red Cross had very talented volunteers in all of their departments, including Junior Red Cross which was established with student-age volunteers. Lou Plante was president of the Tacoma Gun Club when it sponsored the Washington Birthday Classic held on Saturday and Sunday, February 19 & 20, 1949 at the club on Highway 99 in Lakewood. Shooters came to Tacoma for the annual shoot from all parts of the Northwest and parts of California. A keen trap man, Mr. Plante was a life member of the Tacoma Gun Club. He moved to Tacoma in 1911, and was a member of the Plaster Contractors Association. (T.Times, 2/19/1949, p.5)

Two members of the Rhodes Post No. 2, American Legion demonstrated the proper way to fold the flag of the United States to the boys of Boy Scout Troop 55. In February of 1949, to celebrate National Boy Scout Week, the Legion presented three flags to the Salishan Boy Scout troop on behalf of the management of the Salishan housing project. Presentation of flag to Boy Scout Troop 55, Ray Hennessy, Salishan. The Rhodes Post No. 2, American Legion, presented an American flag on January 27, 1949 to Senior Patrol Leader Chuck Buck and the Salishan Boy Scout Troop 55 to celebrate Boy Scout week that year. After demonstrating how to properly fold the American flag, the members of the American Legion presented the folded flag to the troop. Names listed in the newspaper. On the 40th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, South Tacoma Troop 6 presented its charter to the South Tacoma Eagles, Aerie 2933, at the Eagle Lodge Hall. By assuming sponsorship of the Troop, the Eagles agreed to provide leadership, meeting places, help in finances and support for activities. Troop 6, started in 1919, was one of the oldest BSA troops in Tacoma. The charter was presented to R.O. Parnell, President of the South Tacoma Eagles, by H.M. Oldham, field scout executive from the Mount Rainier Council. Clustered around them left to right are Charlie McCoy, Joe Seaburg, E.M. Riggs, W. E. Conner and Jim Barnes. (TNT 2-9-1950 A-11)

In February of 1950, six volunteers were busy packing materials for the American Red Cross fund-raising campaign at the organization's offices at 306 So. 7th St. They were, L-R, Myra (Mrs. R.G.) Glanville, Eleanor Dickinson, Marie Schmide, Mrs. Eric Aleryd, Betty Lambeth and Blanche Stempczynski. Posters for the campaign were tacked up behind the women. Elks Club, Ray Tarr. A huge number of Elks members, 50 strong, have been working on their annual Stocking Fillers campaign to help underpriviledged children for 1949. Committees have been arranging for the big Christmas party for the children and supplying food, clothing and medicine for the deserving. The local Elks lodge has been providing this Christmas cheer for 60 years. A motor scooter used for picking up donations is parked in front of them. Names are listed in the newspaper. General Kaiser coming down gang plank from ship, Mt. McKinley, Chamber of Commerce, Armed Services Committee, Col. James Stack. Brig. Gen. L.B. Keiser led 15,000 troops from Fort Lewis in maneuvers in Hawaii called "Operation Miki". The troops were brought home on board the U.S.S. Mount McKinley which docked at the Tacoma Naval Station. They were met by the Fort Lewis band and the Red Cross. Red Cross volunteers handed out milk, candy and apples. (TNT, 11/17/1949, p.1)

Dinner at New Yorker, Last Man Club American Legion, December 10, 1949. Nineteen men pose with six empty chairs draped with American flags during their annual meeting held at the New Yorker. The Last Man Club was composed of World War I veterans who were past Commanders of the Rhodes Post of the American Legion. Capt. Ada E. Rolstad has just been appointed the new director of the Gray Lady service department for the Pierce County Chapter of the American National Red Cross. Mrs. Rolstad will be in charge of all of the Gray Lady's activities. Mrs. Rolstad has been a Gray Lady at Madigan General Hospital for more than five years, and was the corps chairman during most of World War II (T.N.T., 10/30/49, p. D-9).
