Sam Perkins celebrates his 73rd birthday with friends at the Tacoma Club. Mayor Smitley (far right) and another man sing happy birthday as he prepares to blow out the candles on his huge cake. Mr. Perkins was born in Boston on May 6, 1865 and was christened Sidney Albert Perkins. That moniker was soon shortened to "Sam." For his 73rd birthday, he was feted by some of the friends he made in over 50 years of business in Tacoma. Mr. Perkins was best known locally as the owner of the Tacoma Daily Ledger and the News. (T. A Great Dane extends a paw to hotel personnel as she accompanies Police Chief Jack Elich during the 1953 March of Dimes campaign. Diane Katherine O'Donnell, a pedigreed Great Dane, has a March of Dimes coin bank strapped to her side for donations. The coin banks are in the shape of miniature iron lungs. Diane is the official mascot of the Tacoma Police Department. The March of Dimes was an annual fundraiser by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis to provide the means for polio research and treatment. The pedigreed Great Dane, Diane Katherine O' Donnell, has one paw on the bartender's hand as she focuses her attention on the dollar. Fresh air, comradery, canoes, camp songs and s'mores- it's summer and time for Girl Scout Camp! Tacoma Girl Scouts learn boating in July of 1938 at Camp St. Albans on the shore of Lake Devereaux near Allyn. Seven Girl Scouts pose in a row boat with paddles held in an upright position. The Annie D. Bucsko Orthopedic Guild met at the home of member Judith Messenger on May 14, 1953. Judith was the daughter of Ernest A. Messenger, vice president of Pacific First Federal Savings & Loan Association and resided at 611 No. Starr. The girls in this picture probably belonged to the Junior Guild which would have been composed of high school students in the area. All Junior Guilds had a parent guild to guide them and together would work to raise money for charitable causes. The Annie D. Bucsko Orthopedic Guide was a part of the Tacoma Orthopedic Association; the Tacoma Orthopedic Association was formed in 1921 and proved to be instrumental in establishing the Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in 1955.

John Rudy, member of the Young Men's Business Club and longtime head pro at Fircrest Golf Course, is apparently giving a lesson to a young lady on May 29, 1953. He is carefully positioning the head of the club directly behind the ball. She appears to be getting ready to putt the ball so the correct placement of the club and a proper stance would be necessary. The upper putting green just outside the clubhouse was said to be one of the best practice putting greens in the Pacific Northwest. It was eliminated when the current clubhouse was built in 1995. One of the most anticipated social events for the younger set in 1938 was the "Club of Hearts" yearly formal ball held in the Winthrop Hotel's Crystal Ballroom on December 26, 1938. Helen Feek, Lorraine Ronquist, Sheryl Nyman, and Marcelle Patrick smilingly glance back over their shoulders to have their picture taken. Pictured are six of the seven Tacoma senior Girl Scouts who last year took a "gypsy trip" from Camp Wildwood in Portland, Oregon, to Camp Merriweather in Tillamook. The previous summer's trip took them from the Portland Girl Scout camp to Eugene Oregon and on to the coed Tillamook Camp, where they were the guests of the Boy Scouts. A similar trip is planned for August this year from local Camp St. Albans. The trip, as well as other St Albans innovations, will be financed by the "Cookie Crunch," Jan. 23-Feb. 6th, when the girls take advance orders for Girl Scout cookies. New to St. Albans this year will be a Pioneer Unit for senior girls, sailing trips for the Mariner division and the first time admission of Brownies to camp. Members of the Tacoma and Puyallup chapters of the P.E.O. (philanthropic educational organization) gave a tableaux performance on January 28, 1939 in period costumes, in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Sisterhood. The program and breakfast party was held at the Y.W.C.A. Weyerhaeuser Hall. PEO was a women's organization that celebrated the achievements of women and promoted their educational advancement. In February of 1939 in honor of National Boy Scout Week, (l-r) David Rees, Troop 21, Frank Taylor, Troop 99, and Jim Myers, Troop 59, were busy learning map making. Over 2,200 Tacoma scouts representing Boys Scouts, Sea Scouts and Cub Scouts gathered over the weekend to share knowledge and celebrate the Scout event. Boy Scouting was established in America in 1910. President Woodrow Wilson declared the first National Boy Scout Week in 1919, in recognition of the Scout's service during the first World War. (T. Three scouts (l to r) Jim Myers, Troop 59, David Rees, Troop 2 and Frank Taylor, Troop 99, illustrated the correct way to give the Scout Sign during National Boy Scout Week in 1939. The three middle fingers of the right hand are held upward, representing the three parts of the Scout oath, and the thumb and the little finger touch, representing the bond that unites Scouts throughout the world. Over 2,200 Tacoma area Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts and Cub Scouts from the 110 organized scout units in Tacoma joined together for a full weekend of scout activities in February of 1939.
