One of the most anticipated social events for the younger set in 1938 was the "Club of Hearts" yearly formal ball held in the Winthrop Hotel's Crystal Ballroom on December 26, 1938. Helen Feek, Lorraine Ronquist, Sheryl Nyman, and Marcelle Patrick smilingly glance back over their shoulders to have their picture taken. Pictured are six of the seven Tacoma senior Girl Scouts who last year took a "gypsy trip" from Camp Wildwood in Portland, Oregon, to Camp Merriweather in Tillamook. The previous summer's trip took them from the Portland Girl Scout camp to Eugene Oregon and on to the coed Tillamook Camp, where they were the guests of the Boy Scouts. The trip, as well as other St Albans innovations, will be financed by the "Cookie Crunch," Jan. 23-Feb. 6th, when the girls take advance orders for Girl Scout cookies. New to St. Albans this year will be a Pioneer Unit for senior girls, sailing trips for the Mariner division and the first time admission of Brownies to camp. Members of the Tacoma and Puyallup chapters of the P.E.O. (philanthropic educational organization) gave a tableaux performance on January 28, 1939 in period costumes, in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Sisterhood. The program and breakfast party was held at the Y.W.C.A. Weyerhaeuser Hall. PEO was a women's organization that celebrated the achievements of women and promoted their educational advancement. Celebration of the 1939 National Boy Scout Week. Sea Scout Willard Hoveland of Ship 110 is illustrating to Cub Scout Kenny Johnston of Cub Pack 6 how rope knots are tied. Knot tying instruction was one of the planned activities for the weekend celebration of Scout Week. Scouting was founded in 1907 in Britain by Robert Baden-Powell. In February of 1939 in honor of National Boy Scout Week, (l-r) David Rees, Troop 21, Frank Taylor, Troop 99, and Jim Myers, Troop 59, were busy learning map making. Over 2,200 Tacoma scouts representing Boys Scouts, Sea Scouts and Cub Scouts gathered over the weekend to share knowledge and celebrate the Scout event. Boy Scouting was established in America in 1910. President Woodrow Wilson declared the first National Boy Scout Week in 1919, in recognition of the Scout's service during the first World War. (T. Three scouts (l to r) Jim Myers, Troop 59, David Rees, Troop 2 and Frank Taylor, Troop 99, illustrated the correct way to give the Scout Sign during National Boy Scout Week in 1939. The three middle fingers of the right hand are held upward, representing the three parts of the Scout oath, and the thumb and the little finger touch, representing the bond that unites Scouts throughout the world. Over 2,200 Tacoma area Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts and Cub Scouts from the 110 organized scout units in Tacoma joined together for a full weekend of scout activities in February of 1939. Ira L. Davisson, seated, Utilities Commissioner and Acting Mayor during the illness of Mayor Siegle, helps the Young Men's Business Club boost Tacoma by purchasing poster stamps of Tacoma and nearby scenes. The stamps are being sold by Ebner Mortenson, right, stamp chairman and Dr. H. V. Hoover, left, club president. The stamps will be affixed to 35,000 pieces of departmental mail. In April, Tacoma was in an uproar when Tacoma Postmaster George Fishburne, on order from Washington D.C., banned the Jubilee poster stamps on U.S. mail as being "illegally" similar to some postage stamps. Part of the membership of the Tacoma Amateur Astronomers poses on the College of Puget Sound campus. Their photograph will be exhibited in the planetarium at the New York World's Fair. The group organized in 1931and has built 30 telescopes of varying size and power. The membership has spread and now boasts members as far away as Yakima, Seattle, LaGrande and Wollochet Bay. In May of 1939, the Tacoma Amateur Astronomers met on the campus of the College of Puget Sound to have their photograph taken for an exhibit at the New York Worlds Fair. In this picture, three of the club members are seen with one of the clubs larger telescopes. The young fellow looking through the telescope is Jimmy Wiborg, who was 14-years-old and the youngest member of the club. Jimmy had just recently finished building his own telescope. It had taken him two years to build, including 8 months to grind and polish the six-inch mirror. In this photograph Jimmy is flanked by (left) W.H. Crump, past-president of the club, and Fred Myers, meteorologist at the U.S. Weather Bureau. (T. Times, 5/16/1938, p. 16).

Fourteen year old Jimmy Wiborg gazes through a telescope on the campus of the College of Puget Sound in May of 1939. He is the youngest member of the Tacoma Amateur Astronomers. Other members pictured are, left to right, Fred Myers (meteorologist with the US Weather Bureau) and W.H. Crump (past president of the organization.) The group was posing for a series of pictures scheduled to be exhibited at the New York World's Fair. The group had constructed over 30 telescopes of varying sizes and power. The one pictured was built by Mr. Crump. The club was currently meeting on the campus of CPS, but had purchased property at 968 McKinley Road on McKinley Hill, with the intention of building a clubhouse and observatory. (T.
