The 50th anniversary of the Virginia Dare chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution was celebrated with a guest tea at the Washington State Historical Society museum on Monday, September 10, 1951. For the second year in a row, the Royal Arch Masons of Washington met at the Tenino sandstone quarry to confer the Mark Masters degree to certain recipients in an outdoor ceremony. Royal Arch Masons from throughout Washington congregated in August, 1951; invitations were limited to Masons only and not the general public. Centralia Chapter #44 coordinated the gathering while officers of Sunset Chapter #23, Chehalis, opened the ceremonies. (TNT 8-9-51, B-5)

A large gathering of Royal Arch Masons met for the second year in a row at the Tenino sandstone quarry to confer the degree of Mark Masters to qualified members in an outdoor ceremony. Royal Arch Masons from throughout the state attended the August, 1951, gathering which was sponsored by the Centralia Chapter #44. Ceremonies were opened by the officers of the Sunset chapter #23, Chehalis, with Donald C. Rogers, state head of the order, and his officials in attendance. The Mark Masters degree is built upon a legendary incident which took place during the quarrying of stone for the building of King Solomon's temple. (TNT 8-9-51, B-5)

Afifi Shrine members give big smiles to their young guests as they plan the annual Shrine picnic. The three little girls and young boy are all holding paper ice cream cones as are two of the committee men. The picnic in 1951 was held at the chateau of the Tacoma Sportsmen's Club near the Brookdale Golf Club. It featured contests, ball games, a concert by the Afifi Band, family dinner and closing dance. They had turned over their positions to new officers at the sorority installation banquet held at Crawford's Sea Grill restaurant on August 27, 1951. On Saturday July 21, 1951, members of the Ellen Satterlee Junior Orthopedic Guide became seafaring revellers when they boarded the Gallant Lady for a picnic lunch and cruise. Charting a course are Betty Frangen (left), president, and Joyce Johnstone, chairman of the party. The cruise included a stop at Burton Beach so that the guild members could enjoy an afternoon swim. Miss Jean Trovani, retiring president, presented the presidential gavel to Miss Mitzi Pinch, the new president of the Dr. Edward Rich Orthopedic Junior Guild, on July 10, 1951. Miss Pinch entertained the group at a pot luck dinner at the home of her parents, Morris and Sonya Plotkin. The big winners in the annual Poggie club salmon derby held at Point Defiance on July 22, 1951 were: (l to r) Gary Anderson, sixth-place winner; Ronald Robbecke, first boys' prize with his catch which weighed 16 pounds, 13 ounces; Caryn Ann Piper, first girls' prize with her salmon which weighed 15 pounds, 4 ounces; Chuck Lucich, fourth prize, and Jim Johnson, fifth prize. The third place winner, David Rivett, was not present when this picture was taken. The 335 kids who took part in the annual competition pulled in approximately 512 pounds of salmon, with the help of their dads and friends, during the eight hours of competition. These women are forty of the 170 housewives who completed Red Cross certificates in home nursing to be able to care for the sick in their own homes as part of defense in emergency. Names are listed in the newspaper. The American Red Cross was also 70 years old in May 1951. They reported that $1,000,000,000 had been spent at home and overseas in the 50 years since its first report to Congress. A multi-purpose room has been provided in "The Northwesterner" by using a day bed against an outer wall. The opposite wall provided built-in closets and cabinets. A patterned rug has been placed on the hardwood floors. An easy chair stands across the room under another window. A conversation area has been created off the main part of the living room in "The Northwesterner". Two side chairs and a sofa have been arranged around a coffee table. A china cabinet has been added to provide storage in this area. Two torcheres provide upward lighting at either end of the sofa. Doors can be seen on the right. TPL-7644

Another view of the kitchen in "The Northwesterner". The linear lines of the open beams are emphasized by the cupboards and appliances lining both long walls of the kitchen. The wooden door at the far end of the kitchen mimics the lines of the room. The diagonal pattern of the floor covering provides a break in the repetition of the linear pattern. TPL-7638

The living room in "The Northwesterner" shows the use of an open floor plan. The kitchen can be seen through the opening on the left. The open beam ceiling and far wall have been painted a light color and the interior walls around the kitchen are painted much darker. Modern styling can be seen in the light fixtures, the dining furniture against the wall below a mirror with no molding. A large television is angled across the far corner. A patterned rug has been placed on the hardwood floors. TPL-7641

The bathroom in "The Northwesterner" makes use of space economically. A tub with shower is fitted in on the left next to the toilet. A sink with a small counter also provides storage space below and a drawer on the right. A goose-neck lamp provides lighting over the sink as well as a window covered with patterned glass for privacy. Tile has been used on the floor and the walls. TPL-7643

A small bedroom in "The Northwesterner" provides a wall of storage with closets, drawers and covered cubby holes above. The exterior and interior of the closets and cabinets are painted a light color and the two adjacent walls are painted a dark color. A single bed is set against the wall with windows covered with short, boldly patterned drapes. An easy chair sits against the near wall. TPL-7639

The exterior of "The Northwesterner", the model display home for the third annual Home Show built by the Tacoma Master Builders. The design for the home was an adaptation of Spokane architect Bruce Walker's design that won first award in home design competition. In honor of Flag Day 1951, the Tacoma Elks held special services at their Lodge at 565 Broadway. Preparing for the rites were, L-R, Erling O. Johnson, secretary and speaker for the occasion; Harold L Duncan, exalted ruler; and Burritt B. Anderson, Loyal Knight and Flag Day chairman. The centerpiece for the ceremony was a replica based on Joe Rosenthal's famous photograph of the flag raising on Iwo Jima during World War II. The observance of Flag Day originated with the Elks organization in 1907. In 1949, President Woodrow Wilson, himself a member of the Elks, made June 14th a day of national observance for that symbol of our country. Photograph ordered by the Elks.
