Tired of waiting for the official Daffodil Parade, these kids from the Buckingham Apartments,1001 No. Yakima Ave., decided to stage their own parade on April 8th, 1937. Using dandelions to pinch hit for daffodils, the kids, fully costumed and made up, carried a sign stating "See the Daffodil Parade on Saturday." The 1937 Daffodil Parade. City of Sumner float carrying the festival's Queen Dorothy (Lyons) and her two attendants. Forty-five thousand daffodils were used to decorate the float. On June 5, 1937, over 1,000 Shriners descended on Tacoma for a spring reunion hosted by Tacoma's Afifi Temple. One of the first things that they did was organize a parade. Seven Shriners, including four flag bearers, gather in front of the Winthrop Hotel to wait for the parade to begin. A Shriners marching band is behind them.

Navy Day Parade held in Tacoma during Fleet Week. Sailors march down Broadway in front of buildings in the 900 block. A large crowd of spectators line the sidewalks. Thousands of spectators lined Broadway when over 4,000 soldiers, sailors and marines staged a military parade on Saturday July 24, 1937 as part of the annual Fleet Week program in Tacoma. Some 2,000 soldiers from Ft. Lewis joined 2,200 enlisted men and officers from the six battleships resting at anchor in Commencement Bay. Also taking part in the parade were a battalion of marines from the U.S.S. Oklahoma, and the combined bands of the Oklahoma, the U.S.S. West Virginia and the 10th Field Artillery Band from Ft. Lewis. The parade started at South 15th and Pacific. Marching north, they took So. 9th up to Broadway, and then marched south to So. 17th Street. Governors Review at Fort Lewis. Six military tanks in parade at this point; courtesy of either the 3rd Tank Co. or 41st Tank Co. Each tank has two men standing in the hull. A dirigible from the 3rd Balloon Co. is suspended overhead throughout the review. The U.S. Army put on a show of military force when it gathered 14,000 troops to pass in review before the governors of Washington, Oregon and Montana. Major General George A. White, commander of the 41st Division, was in charge of troop activity. 7518 men were from the national guard; Oregon sent the most, over 3000. (T .Times, 8-21-37, p. 1, 8-23-37, p. 1)

An expansive line of automobiles is parked along the parade grounds in the distance. Thousands of spectators were present to view the largest military review to date at Fort Lewis. 14,000 regular army and national guard troops paraded past the stand where the governors of Washington, Oregon and Montana, along with military officials, stood in review. Eleven bands marched with the units to which they were attached. Governor's Review of National Guard at Fort Lewis. Large crowd of spectators gathered on a hill to observe the largest military review up to that time. Flag bearers followed by military unit on parade grounds. Governors from Washington, Oregon and Montana were present to watch 14,000 regular army and national guard troops pass in formal review. 1938 Daffodil Parade. A colonial and native Americans populate a float entered in the parade by the Improved Order of Redmen stating "We organized the Boston Tea Party in 1773." The float is attributed to "The oldest American organization in the United States." The Order of Redmen is indeed one of America's oldest fraternal organizations not imported from another country. It is also chartered by Congress. The group was founded in 1765 as the Sons of Liberty. It was a secret society dedicated to throwing off the bonds of English tyranny. After the revolution, it assumed its current name. The group is devoted to inspiring a greater love of the United States of America and the principles of American liberty.

A colonial, representing the group's prerevolutionary background, shakes hands with a Native American, whose culture became the backbone of the society's organization and terminology.

1938 Daffodil Parade. Large crowds gathered around the Daffodil Queen Bliss I and her attendants in an elaborate reviewing stand constructed at 10th and Pacific. Bliss Lundrigan, a 17 year old senior at Puyallup High School, is the reigning Queen, attended by Bernice Daniel of Tacoma, left, and Agnes Kucemba of Sumner. The trio appear in their official robes, a first for Daffodil royalty. An estimated 30,000 people attended the parade in Tacoma which continued on into the valley.

Daffodil Pageant. The Merchants Association float featured a lighthouse and row boat with two women fishing. Tacoma Retail Trade Bureau won the grand prize for its "fisherman's paradise" theme. In the background is the Queens viewing stand at 10th and Pacific. Thirty thousand people attended Tacoma's parade.

1938 Daffodil Festival Parade. A float features a floral airplane with the sign: "Tacoma Wholesalers Welcomes The Northwest Air Base." Industrial building in background appears to be Washington Wineries, "Home of the Lovino." On March 30, 1938, the County officials had signed over the deed of Tacoma Field to the War Department to be used in the construction of a giant airbase, to be called McChord Field. 1938 Daffodil Pageant. Queen Bliss Lundrigan and her attendants Agnes Kucemba, right, and Bernice Daniel take their place in the reviewing stand to reign over the parade's 39 entries in Tacoma. For the first time in the Puyallup Valley Festival's 5 year history, the Royalty wears official robes. The costumes worn by the attendants are symbolic of three Pacific Northwest features; the white blouses represent the snows of Mt. Rainier, the yellow vests the fields of daffodils and the green skirts the waters of Puget Sound. Queen Bliss's skirt and robes are of purple for royalty. (T.Times, 4/2/1938, p. 1)
