Scope and content

This portrait was taken in August of 1935 of Henry F. Hunt, left, district assistant superintendent of Tacoma Public Schools, and Elmer L. Breckner, Superintendent of TPS 1931-1937. Mr. Breckner came to Tacoma after serving as superintendent for Olympia schools. He guided Tacoma through two difficult three year terms plagued by Depression Era financial problems. He was ousted from the superintendency by a Board vote of 4-to-1 one month before his contract was to expire. He returned to Olympia to serve in executive positions under the state school superintendent Pearl A. Wanamaker. He died in 1979 at the age of 91. Mr. Hunt was a Tacoma educator of 34 years. He was principal of Stadium for 16 years and District Assistant Superintendent for nearly 9 years when he died in February 1937 of pneumonia. Hunt Middle School, constructed in the late fifties, is named after Henry F. Hunt. ("For the Record, a history of the Tacoma Public Schools 1869-1984" by Winnifred L. Olsen; T.
