Plywood forms are being set into place by workers in August, 1951, as construction continues on the new Whitman Elementary School. A new auditorium will join other school rooms at the new location of 1120 South 39th Street, a short distance from the original school at South 40th and "M" Streets. Badly damaged in the April, 1949, earthquake, the city's first brick schoolhouse was forced to house its 700 students in portables and temporary buildings until the new school was completed in 1952. Photograph ordered by Tom Sias, Douglas Fir Plywood Association. (Olsen, Winnifred, For the Record, p. 75)

Construction continues on building the new Whitman Elementary School during the summer of 1951. Workers are engaged in putting plywood forms into place; walls are being constructed for the school's new auditorium. Whitman Elementary was the city's first brick schoolhouse in 1892; severely damaged in the April, 1949, earthquake, the school was rebuilt in a new location on South 39th Street, a few blocks away from the original site. Until the school was completed in 1952, Whitman's 700 students were housed in portables and temporary buildings. Photograph ordered by Tom Sias, Douglas Fir Plywood Association; (Olsen, Winnifred, For The Record, p. 75)

Workers heave plywood forms as Whitman Elementary School's new auditorium slowly takes shape in the summer of 1951. The plywood would be used for concrete form work as walls are being built. The new elementary school is being built in the city's south end as the original brick schoolhouse was severely damaged in the April, 1949, earthquake. Construction would not be complete until 1952; until then, Whitman's 700 students would be forced to attend school in portables and temporary buildings. Photograph ordered by Tom Sias, Douglas Fir Plywood Association. (Olsen, Winnifred, For the Record, p. 75)
