On July 2, 1946, Tacoma men were looking very hirsute as they prepared for the Post-war Jubilee beard growing contest. At Ernie's Place, Elaine Bailey admired Virgil (left) and George Davelaar's beards. Virg started growing his beard six weeks ago and George had been growing his for five weeks. Both men plan to shave off their beards after the Jubilee is over. Tacoma enjoyed the 1939 Washington State Golden Jubilee celebration so much that the city decided to hold a local Jubilee in 1946 that commemorated absolutely nothing. (T. Times, 7/4/46, p. 3).
