Pacific Lutheran College was dedicating their new $200,000 science hall in October of 1947. Dr. Conrad Bergendoff, President of Augustana College and Seminary at Rock Island, Illinois, was the guest speaker. More than 1,200 people attended the dedication ceremony. Pacific Lutheran College had just dedicated their new $200,000 Science Hall in 1947. Classes were now being taught in the building, which had modern, fully equipped labs available in the classrooms. Johnson (standing, left), Master of Science, Biology. Professor Johnson spent two years at PLC from 1946-48 following his release from service at Fort Lewis. He went on to receive a Ph.D. in zoology at Washington State College (later named Washington State University) in 1953 and joined the faculty at the school's College of Veterinary Medicine the same year. Pacific Lutheran College was cleaning up their campus for the upcoming May Fete carnival in 1948. The carnival would include: the college band playing under the direction of Professor Gunnar J. Malmin, violin solos, folk games and many other activities. The festivities would begin after Queen Ardys Bredvold was crowned, and Student Body President, Walter Kunchak, has read the traditional May Fete. On May 4, 1948, Pacific Lutheran College students were getting their campus ready for the annual May Fete. These unidentified students were raking in front of Old Main and loading the debris in a wheelbarrow. The May carnival would include many fun filled activities for the students. The highlight of the festivities would be the crowning of the 1948 Queen, Ardys Bredvold. TPL-8476

Pacific Lutheran College "Choir of the West" with Professor Gunnar J. Malmin, Director of Music and Choir of the West Conductor. The choir wears traditional robes with a monogrammed stole. The Choir of the West toured the area and performed on the radio. They sang a classical repertoire. Prof. Malmin took over as director of the choir in 1937. A group portrait of the elegantly dressed Pacific Lutheran College Chorus on stage was taken on April 1, 1954. The men are dressed in tuxedos while the women are wearing floor length evening gowns. In the center of the photograph at the piano is the conductor, Professor R. Byard Fritts. The 70 member choir was well known for their beautiful voices and performed often with appearances in the Christmas Concert, Capitol rotunda in Olympia, Omnibus of the Arts, Drama-Music Festival, and the Commencement Recital. Luise Rainer, starring in the Pacific Lutheran College production of "Joan of Lorraine", also took an interest in stage production. She is pictured here, on April 30, 1954, standing on a bench adjusting the large light fixtures that would illuminate the stage. Several students lend a hand in the lighting as well. Miss Rainer was a well-known stage and screen actress who had won two Academy Awards in the 1930's. The music building was completed in 1952; it contained a large auditorium, chapel, and the school's speech department. Constructed of reinforced concrete with brick veneer, the building was designed by the architectural firm of Lea, Pearson & Richards with Steiro & Hansen as general contractors. It was designed to be the religious and cultural center of the campus.

Area residents would be fortunate to be able to see Academy Award winning actress, Luise Rainer, appear in the play, "Joan of Lorraine", which was held during Pacific Lutheran College's third annual drama-music festival in May, 1954. Pianist Jakob Gimpel, who was also a guest artist in the drama-music festival, accompanied Miss Rainer in the matinee program. Miss Rainer, Viennese-born, was a stage and screen actress who won Academy Awards for The Good Earth and The Great Ziegfeld. 500 women attended the Evangelical Lutheran Church convention from the Pacific District in early June, 1953. A large number of them posed for this group portrait in front of the new music/chapel/speech building at Pacific Lutheran College on June 9, 1953. Perhaps some of the meetings may have occurred in the new building as the auditorium was designed to hold over 1,000 people. Mrs. Harold J. Pacific Lutheran College's 1952 Homecoming Queen, Inga Astrup, and her two attendants, Princess Darlene DeJardine and Princess Helen Enger, reigned over Homecoming weekend with the coronation ceremony, the football game against Eastern, the Powder Puff Bowl and various teas. Inga was a junior from Grenora, North Dakota. Darlene was a junior from Tacoma and Helen was a senior from Everett. All three co-eds were majoring in education. (TNT, 11/6/1952, p.13)
