This is Main Street in Sumner as it appeared in January, 1940. Buildings on either side of the street include the Three Little Pigs Tavern, the Riviera Theater, Putman's Hardware, and the Sumner Safeway among others. Sumner, which can trace its history to the 1870s, was named after Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts. (T. Times, Special Edition)

Pauline Martin, 18, was just selected as the 8th annual Puyallup Valley Daffodil Festival queen on February 28, 1941. She was chosen queen during a pageant held at Sumner High School. Miss Martin, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Martin, was a resident of Sumner. She would be crowned on March 22, 1941, by J. Arthur Thompson, president of that year's festival.
