The 1966 Cheney Studs basketball team posed for a group picture on March 9, 1966, at the Bellarmine gym. They would soon leave for Denver for their second consecutive appearance at the AAU basketball tournament as the Northwest representative. The team would lose to the top-seeded Armed Forces All Stars. The Studs finished their season with a 23-6 record. Jim Van Beek, #22, led the team in individual scoring for a 21.9 point average. Clint Names, #20, was the total Studs scoring champ at 587 points in 29 games. The Studs were led by player-coach George Grant. Bellarmine High School Midget Football Team. Bellarmine, coached by Leo Eckstein, won the city championship in 1938, 14 to 7 against Lincoln High School. Midget class players were 132 pounds and under. The last city midget championship was played in 1940. Bellarmine basketball stars. Group portrait of five team members holding basketballs. The player in the second row, to the right, is reported to be Robert A. O'Connell. The player at the top is believed to be team captain Richard "Dick" Smith. Wearing uniform #4 is Clare Normile, center for the team. In 1940 there were only three teams that vied for the City championship--Stadium, Lincoln and Bellarmine. That March the season ended in a three-way tie with all teams sporting a 4-4 record. Bellarmine, once thought out of the race, had beaten Stadium 30-28 in two overtimes to force a two-game playoffs. On March 11th Bellarmine defeated Lincoln on Lincoln's home court 25-23. The following evening saw Stadium thump Bellarmine 31-20 to send the Tigers to the state championships. (T. Father Gordon Toner, S.J. of Bellarmine High School and "wounded" Don Spurgin attend an unidentified victim as they practise for a possible Japanese attack on Tacoma in the emergency aid center at Bellarmine. By April of 1942, Tacoma had made extensive plans in case we became the target of Japanese bombers. Emergency hospitals were set up in each of the city's three high schools, six junior high schools and the College of Puget Sound. May 11, 1943 review of Junior ROTC at Bellarmine High School. Portrait of dignitaries including priests, instructors, military officials and a woman. Over 300 guests witnessed the inspection and review. The event held soon after Mother's Day honored the mothers of the cadets and started with a military field mass and breakfast. On Tuesday May 9, 1944, as a tribute to their mothers, the cadets of Bellarmine High School's R.O.T.C. battalion staged a military review and parade for the Philomanthea Mothers' Club. Following the review, awards were presented to individual cadets who's records in school warranted special recognition in the areas of academic excellence, leadership and marksmanship. Eleven of the participants shown in this photograph are identified in the Tacoma Times of May 10, 1944 on page 5. (T. Times, 5/10/44, p. 5).

Bellarmine High School Basketball team. The Bellarmine High School sophomore basketball team are the champions of the Tacoma sophomore league. The just beat the Lincoln and Stadium teams. This win also makes them the Upper City Teenage League champions. Names appear in newspaper (T. Times, 3/16/46, p. 5).

Tom O'Leary (center) was yell leader at Bellarmine High School during the 1945-46 school year. Backed by Charles Kelly (left) and B. Ludeman (right), his cheers were described in the school yearbook as being like "a string of firecrackers exploding". Although none of Bellarmine's varsity teams won city titles that school year, there was still plenty to cheer about with four Lions football players being named to the Tacoma All-City team and three basketball players receiving the same honor. In 1946, Bellarmine was one of only two Washinton high schools that offered junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps. Each day a full class period was devoted to some phase of theoretical or practical military training. Studies included first aid, marksmanship, map reading, and the fundamentals of marching. Uniforms furnished by the government were worn two days per week. (Cage, 1946, p. 20-21).
