At the turn of the century, state Masons acknowledged the need for a safe haven for aged Masons, wives, widows and widowed mothers. The first Masonic Home was located in Puyallup, but the need soon outgrew the facility. In 1924, 82 acres were purchased in Zenith (now Des Moines) for approximately $79,000.
