Children at Edison School are waiting in line for lunch at the school cafeteria. The school was built in 1892, added to and modernized several times. In 1947, a condition report for the Tacoma School District stated that Edison needed "exhaustive repairs". When a five-mill school levy was asked for in 1948, Edison did not make the priority list for repairs. Old and vulnerable, the brick school building was severely damaged in the April 1949 earthquake. It was condemned as unsafe and was ordered closed. In 1952 and again in 1997, new Edison elementary schools have been built for South Tacoma children. TPL-9674
