Dr. J. Morrison Brady, superintendent of the Pierce County Hospital, accepts delivery of a new "Invalift" which would assist in the lifting of an incapacitated individual via a sling. The new device was given by the Pierce County Wholesale and Retail Malt Beverage dealers. T.O. Larsen has his hand on the crank which would raise and/or lower the device. Chet Adwen and A.K. Wetmore are shown presenting Dr. Brady with what appears to be a check. Photograph ordered by Washington State Tavern Association. (TNT 12-21-52, C-13)

Mike Claflin was one of the unlucky children in Tacoma in 1950 who had to spend Christmas in a hospital bed. The son of Ellis Claflin of Puyallup, a civilian employee at the Tacoma U.S. Naval Station, Mike was a polio patient at Pierce County Hospital. He is shown here, his radio hanging next to his pillow, reading one of the books sent to him at the hospital from Meeker School in Puyallup. The naval station used the slogan "March for Mike" during their March of Dimes campaign in 1951. (TNT, 1/21/1951, p.B-12)

In April of 1950, Bob Haddow, age 21, was one of the first patients at Pierce County Hospital, 3572 Pacific Ave., to try out the hospital's new portable iron lung, called a "chestpirator". It had be purchased recently for the hospital by the Pierce County chapter of the National Foundation of Infantile Paralysis, of which John H. Binns (left) was chairman. It was hoped that the new machine would allow Bob Haddow to leave the hospital and return home. Ordered by Pierce County Chapter, National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Seven-year-old Jackie Bowmer laces himself into braces on both his legs after physical therapy at the Pierce County Hospital while his younger brother, Larry, who also had polio, holds his crutches. Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Bowmer had another child who did not develop polio. Jackie received physical therapy treatments twice a week.
