ca. 1919. Tacoma architect C. Frank Mahon drew this delineation of Holy Rosary Church before construction began on the Catholic church in 1920. Located at 520 South 30th Street, its Gothic steeple has long been a Tacoma landmark. Mahon's architectural work for the Catholic Diocese included many schools and churches in Tacoma in addition to Marymount Boys School in Spanaway and St. Martin's College in Lacey. (B2308)

Holy Rosary Church was originally a wooden structure built in 1891, in 1920 this gothic style building was erected at the same site. This church is 270 feet from the ground to the cross, the steeple is 54 feet. In 1941 Holy Rosary Catholic Church celebrated its 50th anniversary. View of scaffolding in the altar area, three workmen are located on top, the church was likely going through some maintenance or painting. The Silver Sacerdotal was celebrated on May 26, 1940 at the Catholic church located at 520 South 30th St. Father Hack had come to Holy Rosary in 1935 after time spent as pastor of South Tacoma's Church of the Visitation and Seattle's Assumption Church. On October 19, 1941, the Holy Rosary parish celebrated its Golden (50th) Anniversary. The altar boys lead an outdoor processional to the church. The cross bearer is Daniel Jacques and at his right and left are acolytes Robert Beaudean and George Bader. Following are James McGiffin and Joseph Zajac, Thomas Brady and Patrick Shugrue, Gerald Hendrickson and John Harbottle, Keith McGoffin and Neil Snarski, Roy Berrin and John Quinn, Rev. Demetrius Jueneman and Rev. Luke O'Donnell, the Very Rev. Msgr. D.A. Hanly and Rt. Rev. Abbot Lambert Burton. Wilfred, stationed at Fort Lewis, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hess of Albertville, Minnesota. The bride wore a gown of heavy white satin made with a beaded lace yoke. The bride wore a white slipper-satin gown fashioned with a lace yoke, princess panel, pointed sleeves and an arched hipline. Miss Jean Bucsko was maid of honor. This front-on view of the exterior of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church with scaffolding set against its spire was taken on May 16, 1949, just a month after the devastating earthquake that damaged many buildings in the Puget Sound region, including some of the parish buildings. The gothic style church with its tall 54-foot steeple (270 feet from the ground to the top of the cross) dominates the city's skyline for long distances. Safway Steel Scaffolds Company. An exterior view of Church of the Holy Rosary with scaffolding ascending the lower portion of the spire. The church was originally built in 1891 of wood. In 1920 the brick structure was demolished and this brick, gothic style building was built at the same location. The rectory, located at 512 South 30th Street, is seen next to the church on the north.
