This is how the Interurban Terminal, 702 A St., looked on July 13, 1925 from the alley & 8th Street. The Tacoma-Olympia bus, or auto stage, was parked along the side waiting for connecting passengers. In the right rear was a side view of Puget Sound Electric Railway No. 516. Partially viewed to the left of #516 was one of the Tacoma Railway & Power's Stone & Webster 200 cars used on McKinley Ave. Puget Sound Electric Company began interurban line service between Tacoma and Seattle in 1902. The direct (limited) service, with stops only at Kent and Auburn, left every hour on the half hour between 7:30 a.m. and 6:35p.m. The local left every hour 6 a.m. -8 p.m., with 2 later streetcars, service ending at 11:35p.m. Locals stopped at all way stations. The Interurban Depot at 8th and A St. The Puget Sound Electric Railway operated the Tacoma-Seattle Interurban, traveling 36.5 miles from Tacoma to Seattle. Parked in front of the depot are two buses, one travelling Seattle-Tacoma-Olympia and another Seattle-Tacoma-Portland, waiting for connecting passengers. To the right is the train bound for Seattle, stopping only at Auburn-Kent. The clock tower of Tacoma City Hall looms in the background. The raised billboard to the left is for the "Interurban and Auto Stage Terminal," and lists the areas served. In the beginning, 1902, the Tacoma-Seattle route had 22 stops and operated at 2 hour intervals. It cost 60 cents one way and $1.00 round trip. TPL-1626; G66.2-004 ("To Tacoma By Trolley" by Warren W. In October of 1940, laborers were hard at work, converting the old Interurban Depot at 702 A St. into the Soldiers and Sailors Clubhouse. The Mission style building had started life in 1902 as the depot for the Puget Sound Electric Railroad. In 1937, it became the new home of the Washington State Patrol. Around 1974, the building was restored once again and renamed the Park Place Building.

This is a closer view of the old Interurban Depot at 702 A Street undergoing conversion into a Soldiers & Sailors Clubhouse. Four painters are touching up the building's exterior on October 30, 1940. The clubhouse would provide a place for enlisted men in the Armed Forces to relax and dine. See D10384, images 4 and 2 for other views of the renovation work.

These two unidentified painters were working on the Soldiers & Sailors Club, located in the old two-story Interurban Station at 8th & A Streets, in October of 1940. The former depot was scheduled to become an Army-Navy enlisted men's club. Reading and lounging rooms were to be maintained along with a restaurant. Current newspapers and books plus radios and a piano would be provided for the entertainment of the servicemen. Transportation via Fort Lewis buses would stop at the club. Mayor Harry P. Cain had introduced an ordinance to the city council for $5,000 to fund the project. The Soldiers & Sailors Club was to be self-supporting after its establishment.
