Party given at the Roller Bowl by Mary Jean Morris and her brother, Jim, for their house guest, Henry Taylor of San Mateo. Facing forward, Mary Jean is flanked by Henry at left and Jim at right. Mary Jean and Jim are the daughter and son of the J.E. Morrises. Many of the younger crowd, especially those home for year-end holidays, were in attendance at the roller skating party held two days after Christmas in 1940. (T. Times 1-1-1941, p. 9)

Spinster Club members and guests enjoyed an evening of roller skating at Berg's Roller Bowl, 8006 South Tacoma Way, on January 18, 1941. A "Judge" fits a roller skate on one of the female guests at the Spinster Club's skating party at the Roller Bowl on January 18, 1941. He wears a sign labelled "Judges," and another man wears one stating "Dr. Quack, First Aid." The roller skates fit over the persons' shoes, like street skates. In January of 1941 the Tacoma Spinster Club sponsored a roller skating party at Berg's Roller Bowl at 8006 South Tacoma Way in Lakewood. Four Spinster Club members, wearing saddle shoes and steel roller skates fastened with keys, were photographed at the skating party with two of their guests. Pictured left to right are Mary Katherine Hager, Ruth Taylor, Charles D. Mellinger, Wyona Diemer, Catherine Foss and Bill Zeh. The Spinster Club was a social group of prominent young women. (T. For the first time in its 10 year history, the Washington State Roller Skating Championships were held in Lakewood on March 26-27, 1951. Sponsored by the Roller Skating Rink Operators of America, the competition was held at the Roller Bowl on South Tacoma Way. In this group picture of all the entrants, the contestants for "Queen of the Skates" are in the center of the front row. Berg's Roller Bowl Skating Rink was built at 8006 South Tacoma Way in 1940. Nine months after this picture was taken, on December 29, 1951, the Roller Bowl was destroyed by fire. TPL-9339

Lanette Adams is shown practicing at her parents' roller skating rink, The Roller Bowl, in April of 1949. The Roller Bowl, owned by Roger W. and Dolores Adams, was located in Lakewood at 8006 South Tacoma Way. Lanette won the Primary Girls Freestyle championship in 1949 and was the first Northwest roller skater to win the U.S. National Roller Skating championships in both 1949 and 1950. She won first place in the juvenile free style at the Washington State championships in 1951. Lanette was seven years old at the time. (Gallacci, Blau, McArthur: Playground to the Pros).
