Scope and content

ca. 1926. Walker Cut Stone Company, view of rock quarry in Wilkeson. Located about 3 miles southwest of the current location of Buckley, Wilkeson was an important producer of coal and sandstone. Sandstone was a common building and paving material. The sandstone quarry was operated by Walker Cut Stone from 1914-1959. The drillers and powdermen worked from temporary platforms on the face of the stone that could be moved as needed. It took three cranes to move the men and equipment up to the platforms to work.
