Harry Pitcher (kneeling, far left), the engineer in charge of construction of the new Clover Park High School shop building, supervised the laying of the cornerstone on March 10, 1941. The $16,000 shop building was part of the national defense education service project. It was financed 50-50 by the school district and the WPA. The building was scheduled to be completed in June, when the school would begin to conduct both day and night classes for enlisted men. Planned courses include metal and wood working, blueprint reading, machine drawing, pre-aviation and completion of high school studies. Clover Park was chosen as the location for the facility due to its proximity to Ft. Lewis, Camp Murray and McChord Airfield.
