Scope and content
Harness horse trotters (l to r) "Captain King" driven by Bud Kennedy, "Fez Hanover" driven by Sam Askew, and "Maxie Hal" driven by Jerry Buck worked out in June of 1948 to prepare for the coming racing season at the Washington Harness Track. The half-mile track was located in South Tacoma near the McCord Field Junction on Highway 99. The short racing season began on July 10 and ran four days, over two weekends, with seven races each day. Drivers, including three women, were from Washington and Portland, Oregon. Sam Askew was 78-years-old; Jerry Buck was only 15. (T.N.T., 7/11/1948, p. B-3).
